For many firms, the easiest year-end tax move is simply deciding when to send your invoices. If you're on a cash basis, delaying billing into January and paying expenses in December can shift income into next year, as long as you're not holding payments that are already available to you.

Accrual-basis firms can deduct year-end bonuses this year if the amounts are fixed by December 31 and paid by March 15, although bonuses for owners generally count only when they're paid.

Law firms have one extra step. Client trust and IOLTA funds stay out of income until they're earned and transferred, so year-end is the time to reconcile those accounts.

Don't have REPS? A short-term rental may still let your losses count. When the average guest stay is seven days or fewer and you materially participate, those losses can offset your other income, even if you have a full-time job.

That matters because 100% bonus depreciation is now permanent for property acquired after January 19, 2025. A cost segregation study breaks a building into components like flooring, cabinetry and landscaping, and many of them can be written off right away, which can create a large first-year deduction on property placed in service this year.

Without REPS or the short-term rental route, though, those losses may be passive and sit unused, so it's smart to run the numbers before ordering a study. https://bit.ly/4zdnWE9

Clothing is generally not deductible if it's suitable for everyday wear, while costumes and highly specialized wardrobe pieces have a better chance of qualifying.

Travel works a little differently. It's deductible in proportion to its business purpose, so if you spend three days of a five-day trip filming or meeting with brands, that share may be deductible while the vacation days aren't. A home studio can qualify too, but only if the space is used regularly and exclusively for your business, which means the corner of the living room where you also watch TV won't count.

Thinking about a new camera, lighting setup or computer? Thanks to 100% bonus depreciation, which is now permanent, qualifying equipment can be fully deducted this year, as long as it's purchased and set up by December 31. An order that arrives in January won't help this year's return.

Before the year closes, add a short note to each mixed-use expense explaining its business purpose. It's a small habit that makes a big difference if anyone ever asks.

A law firm and an architecture firm can earn the same profit and still get very different tax breaks. The QBI deduction lets pass-through owners deduct up to 20% of qualified business income, but law and consulting firms are specified service businesses (SSTBs), so high-earning owners lose it entirely.

Architecture and engineering are expressly excluded from that list, which means owners keep the deduction at higher incomes, subject to wage and property limits. Most marketing agencies qualify too, unless the work is really consulting.

If your firm is eligible, now's the time to model owner salaries and W-2 wages to find the sweet spot, since payroll can still be adjusted before December 31.

Your rental losses could be offsetting your other income, but only if your hour log holds up. Real estate professional status (REPS) lets rental losses offset wages and business income instead of sitting trapped as passive losses.

To qualify, you need more than 750 hours in real estate businesses and more than half of your total working time spent there, plus material participation in your rentals. The IRS expects your log to be kept as you go, so take time before year-end to match it against your calendar, emails and mileage.

If you own several rentals, determine whether an election to group them as one activity makes sense, since it lets your combined hours count together.

That PR package on your doorstep? The IRS may see it as a paycheck.

When a brand sends you products, hotel stays, meals or trips in exchange for content, that's generally taxable income at its fair market value, even though no cash changed hands.

It's one of the most common blind spots we see with creators, and it gets trickier now that many of you won't receive a 1099 at all. The 1099-K threshold is back to $20,000 and 200 transactions, and starting in 2026, brands only have to send a 1099-NEC once they've paid you $2,000 or more. The income is still taxable whether or not a form shows up, so your own records need to be the source of truth.

Here's a simple fix you can start today. Build an in-kind income log with the date, the brand, what you received, its fair market value and a link to the content you created in return. It's much easier to do now than in April. https://bit.ly/4iUr96E

One of the most underrated perks of brokerage consolidation? Referral networks. When large brokerages combine, their agent networks combine too, opening the door to relocation business and referrals from agents across the country and around the world.

As buyers and sellers relocate more often for work, retirement, and lifestyle changes, being plugged into a wider network means capturing that business instead of losing it to someone else.

Growing income from new markets and referral sources brings its own financial questions. We help real estate professionals make sense of it all, so opportunity doesn't come with a headache attached. https://bit.ly/4cA0esN

A single sponsored post gives a brand a brief spike in attention. A longer partnership, where a creator keeps showing up with the same product over weeks or months, compounds the trust that's already been built and drives the kind of repeat buying behavior brands actually want.

That same principle applies to your own business as a creator. Recurring brand ambassador income, rather than one-off deals, is becoming the norm, and it's exactly the kind of steady, evolving revenue that deserves a real financial strategy behind it.

If your influencer income is starting to look less like occasional checks and more like a business, we'd love to help you plan for what's next. https://bit.ly/4x5UluT
