🔥 Most people think of ice storms as a water damage problem.

Here’s what they don’t think about — and what we see every time a major ice event hits North Georgia.

When ice storms knock out power, homeowners reach for alternatives to stay warm. And those alternatives — when used incorrectly — become serious fire and safety hazards:

⚡ Portable generators
Carbon monoxide from generators running in garages or near windows is one of the leading causes of storm-related deaths. Generators must be operated at least 20 feet from any door, window, or vent — outside, in the open air.

🔌 Space heaters
Space heaters cause thousands of house fires every year — most from being placed too close to curtains, bedding, or furniture. Never leave a space heater running unattended or while you sleep.

🕯️ Candles
Power outages mean candles — and candles left unattended during a stressful, chaotic ice storm night are one of the most common fire sources we see after winter events.

🔥 Oven or stove for heat
Using a gas stove or oven to heat your home during an outage creates carbon monoxide risk and is a leading cause of storm-related fires.

This winter — with El Niño bringing more active weather to North Georgia — have a plan before the power goes out. Not during.

If an ice storm fire finds your home — we’re ready.

❄️ El Niño Winter Prep — Week 2: Protecting Your Pipes.

Last week we shared what forecasters are saying about this winter for North Georgia — stronger El Niño on record, more ice events, colder temperatures, more active storm track.

This week: the #1 thing that brings North Georgia homeowners to our door after a hard freeze.

Burst pipes.

A single burst pipe can release hundreds of gallons of water into your home before you even know it happened. And in North Georgia — where hard freezes are infrequent enough that most homes aren’t built with the same pipe insulation as northern states — the risk is higher than most people realize.

Here’s how to protect your home before temperatures drop:

🚰 Know where your main water shut-off is — right now
If a pipe bursts, every second before you can shut the water off matters. Make sure every adult in your home knows the location.

🧣 Insulate exposed pipes in unheated spaces
Crawl spaces, garages, and exterior walls are where pipes freeze first. Foam pipe insulation is inexpensive and takes minutes to install.

💧 Let faucets drip during a hard freeze
A slow drip keeps water moving through your pipes — moving water is much harder to freeze than standing water.

🌡️ Keep your heat on — even when you’re away
If you’re traveling, don’t turn the heat off completely. Keep it at a minimum of 55°F to protect your pipes.

🚪 Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls
Letting warm air reach those pipes during cold nights makes a real difference.

With El Niño bringing a more active winter to North Georgia — this is the year to actually do these things before December.

We’ll be here if you need us. But we’d rather you never do. 💙

❄️ North Georgia — we need to talk about this winter.

NOAA is forecasting what could be the strongest El Niño on record for the 2026–27 season. And for us here in North Georgia, that means one thing:

This winter is going to be more active than most people are prepared for.

Here’s what forecasters are saying:

🌧️ Above-average precipitation across Georgia — more rain, more ice events, and more opportunities for snow in the northern third of the state
🌡️ A more active southern storm track — meaning repeated weather systems moving through our region all winter long
🧊 Higher risk of ice storms — the setup El Niño creates is exactly the kind that produces freezing rain and sleet across North Georgia
❄️ Cold snaps that can happen quickly — even in winters that average near-normal temperatures

What does this mean for your home?

Frozen and burst pipes. Ice dam damage on roofs. Flooding from rapid snowmelt. Water intrusion from ice storms.

These aren’t worst-case scenarios this winter. They’re real possibilities that North Georgia homeowners should be preparing for right now — in October — not in January when it’s too late.

Over the next several weeks we’ll be sharing specific steps to get your home ready. Stay with us.

And if winter damage finds you before you’re ready — we’re here. 24/7.

🔥 You cleaned everything. Opened all the windows. Burned every candle in the house.

And the smoke smell keeps coming back.

Here’s why — and why it keeps happening no matter what you try.

Smoke doesn’t just sit on surfaces. It penetrates them.

During a fire, smoke particles are superheated and forced into porous materials — drywall, wood framing, insulation, carpet, upholstery, even the inside of your HVAC system. They bond at a molecular level to everything they touch.

Wiping down surfaces removes what you can see. It does nothing for what’s inside the material.

Every time your home heats up — from the sun, from your HVAC, from normal daily living — those trapped particles off-gas back into the air.

That’s why the smell comes back. Every time.

The only way to truly eliminate smoke odor is professional remediation — which treats the surfaces AND the air, using thermal fogging, ozone treatment, or hydroxyl generators to neutralize the odor at its source, not mask it.

If you’ve been fighting smoke smell and losing — call us.
