Leadership is not about you.
When I was in college I got a summer job at a local retailer. Then, when school was back in session, I transferred to a location closer to campus. While at the second location, I remember getting frustrated when tasks weren’t completed and we were behind for the day. I thought, “This isn’t that hard. Why can’t we get done what we need to get done?”
You see, I was a pretty serious student at a very expensive private college and I really needed the job. So, I made sure I did everything I could to accomplish what was assigned to me during my shift. What I didn’t realize is that not everyone is like me.
Some people were there because their parents told them they had to have a job. For some it was a second job for some fun money. Others were there full-time, but had family responsibilities that sometimes pulled them away prior to the end of their shift. Some were really serious and focused on the task at hand. No one is better or worse than another, just different.
I was young and very naive to the ways of the world and what leadership truly meant. I thought my direct supervisor only need to give direction and people would do what they were asked. No problem, right?
Wrong.
Through time, experience, talking with mentors and reading some great books, I learned being a leader is so much more than just making requests and giving direction.
Great leaders know it’s not about them. It’s about the people they serve. You heard that right, it’s about the people they serve.
Their Team Members.
The people working in their location, region, division, and company.
It’s about finding out what makes these people tick. What do they love? What are they good at? What do they need, or want, to learn more about? What challenges are they facing? What fears do they have? And the list goes on….
When getting to know your Team Members, you can think about all of those questions. Or, you can think about the six human needs.
Certainty
Variety
Significance
Love/Connection
Growth
Contribution
Understanding what these needs mean will help you understand your Team Members better and ultimately give you the keys to what motivates and inspires them.
