Two very special paintings. My client brought them in almost apologizing that they weren’t very valuable, but then she told me an incredible story. These paintings belonged to her grandmother in Germany and were likely smuggled across the border during World War II.

The beautiful little painting of the Grimm House on cobblestone streets is dated 1937 and is set in Asch, Germany. Asch is very close to the border which gave the owner of these paintings a chance to smuggle them to safety at night along with other valuables.

The landscape you see, with the bridge over the stream, is a scene in Dachau, painted before the war and the horrors Dachau is known for. The painting appears in a family photo taken before the war, with her mother, grandmother and great grandmother in the foreground.

Both paintings have responded well to cleaning and are safe now for generations to come.
