"We find only the world we look for." ~ Thoreau

Simply, I want to look for beauty. I want to find it and express it and share it with others. I paint as often as possible.

A little feed cleanser. ♥️This little painting began my love affair with painting geraniums. A simple little piece but the start of something new. I’ve always wanted to practice floral still life more but for some reason, they intimidate me. Maybe this is the week to practice some more! Remember practice makes better, not perfect.

Well, that last video brought a lot of new people into my little corner of the internet! And quite a few of you had questions about what exactly I was doing.

Pastel has always lived in that interesting space between drawing and painting, but I’m very much a pastel painter. I use the sticks much the way I would use a brush. I’m building shapes, color, value, edges and layers to create a painting. I just get to hold the pigment directly in my hand.

And I love that so many of you are discovering this medium for the first time. Keep the questions coming. ❤️

One of the most common questions on my last video was some version of, “Wait…why are you calling this painting when you’re not using paint?”

I paint with soft pastel, which is essentially pigment in stick form. There’s no brush, no water, and no waiting for anything to dry (mostly). I can pick up a color and put it directly onto the surface, which is one of the things I’ve always loved about it.

Pastel can absolutely be used for drawing, but the way I work with it is much closer to painting. I’m thinking about shapes, masses, values, edges and layers of color rather than outlining and filling things in. I’m filling a surface with pigment. The marks just happen to come straight from the pastel instead of from a brush.

And yes, I saw all of you asking about the paper! I use sanded papers, so the pastel has something to hold onto. There are many different brands and each has their own special quality. (Incidentally I have a free downloadable pastel paper guide on my site). The sanded texture grabs the pigment and lets me build up layer after layer without turning everything to a muddy mess.

It’s a wonderfully immediate, messy, tactile way to paint, and after all these years, I still love watching a handful of little sticks of pigment turn into a painting.

And if you found me through that last video, Hi! I’m glad you’re here. 🌻

Hi! (My new friend needs a name.) 🤓

When I was in school, I got sent to the office when there were new kids or foreign exchange students. I was the one to take them around to classes, show them the school, and introduce them to new people. 🥰

I’ve always liked meeting new friends and I’m so happy to feel like showing my face again. What would you like me to talk about? Cause believe me, I can tawlk. I’m from Texas, it’s in my blood.

Hi!! I’m Bethany and I’m a life long artist. I’ve done a lot of creative things!

It’s so nice to meet you.
