Pick your battles.

06/16/2026

Building a strong culture in your business is about more than team building activities, mission statements, or core values hanging on a wall.

The culture of your business will always be influenced by the culture you carry within yourself.

If your personal values and your business values are not aligned, you will constantly find yourself in a wrestling match with an alligator. You will expend enormous energy just trying to stay in control, battle decisions, question your direction, and feel pulled between what you believe and what your business is demanding from you.

When your personal values and business values work together, everything becomes clearer. Decisions become easier. Expectations become more consistent. Leadership becomes more authentic.

That does not mean every day is easy. It means you are no longer fighting yourself while trying to lead others.

Take time to ask yourself:

• Does my business reflect what matters most to me?
• Am I building something I am proud of?
• Do my decisions align with both my purpose and my values?

Alignment does not guarantee success overnight, but it creates a foundation that can withstand challenges and growth.

The strongest cultures are built when leaders stop trying to separate who they are from what they are building.

When your values and your vision are aligned, you spend less energy fighting the battle within and more energy winning the mission ahead.

Accountability and compassion can exist at the same time.

Too often, leaders think they have to choose between being kind and holding high standards. The best leaders do both.

When someone is struggling, do not immediately assume it is a people problem. Audit the system first. Is the process clear? Is the training sufficient? Is there a roadblock in the system? Or is the person simply not in the right seat?

Hold people accountable, but do it with compassion and reality instead of force.

When you lead this way, you develop people instead of discouraging them. You create lasting growth, stronger teams, and better results.

Most leaders are focused on what needs to get done. I used to be too. But what I have learned after years of coaching leaders and running my own company is that your team does not just follow your instructions. They experience your leadership. How you show up, how you speak, how you make people feel. That is your real leadership. Start there.

Like this lopsided hat…

Leaders are not perfect, and pretending to be does not help the people you lead.

Your team needs to see that you are human. That does not mean sharing every struggle or laying everything on the table. It means being real enough that people know mistakes happen, growth is ongoing, and perfection is not the expectation.

When leaders allow others to see appropriate vulnerability, they create trust. They create a culture where people feel safe to learn, ask questions, and grow.

People do not need a perfect leader. They need a genuine one.

What does it take to run a childcare business? Thick skin. A big heart. Business sense. And an unshakeable commitment to doing what is right for children and families even when it is hard. It is not glamorous. But it is purpose driven work and that makes all the difference. And it takes a team like this one right here. I do not take that for granted for a single day.

I don’t just lead a company. I lead people. And the moment I stopped trying to do it all alone and started moving my team forward together, everything changed. Success is not a solo sport.

I used to wait for the right moment to lead. The perfect plan. The perfect timing.
What I learned is that leadership doesn’t wait for you to be ready.
The best leaders I’ve coached stepped up in the middle of the mess.
Stop waiting. Start moving. Your team needs you now.

💡 You weren't called to lead the way everyone else does.

You were called to lead the way only YOU can.

The strongest leaders don't copy the playbook. They build their own. Rooted in deep conviction, tested by experience, and sharpened by real results.

This week's challenge: Name one belief you hold about leadership that most people in your world would push back on.

That belief? That's your edge. Don't abandon it. Sharpen it. Lead from it.

Tonight I’m sitting outside and enjoying my time to just sit and enjoy life!

Life is a journey, and I have learned that the hard way. In my early days as a CEO, I believed I had to do everything myself or it would not be done right.

Over the years, I have learned lessons that have changed how I lead and how I live.
1. I do not have to be the face of everything for my business to succeed. When I invest in others and grow leaders, the impact is stronger and the journey becomes more meaningful.
2. Working smarter matters. Slowing down to train and develop others creates long term strength. It is not about my way being the only way.
3. Everything does not have to be finished today. The work will still be there, and my business will not fall apart if I take a breath and prioritize well.
4. I cannot truly take care of others if I am not taking care of myself first. That has to be a priority.
5. What feels urgent in the moment is not always worth the frustration. Most things work themselves out without the stress we put on them.

Leadership becomes more fulfilling when you stop trying to control everything and start building something that can grow beyond you.

Comment below what you’ve learned along your journey.
