One of the best parts of the Iowa Veterans Entrepreneurship Conference is the opportunity each participant has to pitch their business idea for a chance to win money to put towards their business! For the second year in a row, we were able to offer two pitch competitions to our attendees. The first was hosted by the ISU Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship and America's SBDC Iowa, and those who pitched had the chance to win up to $2,500 for their business. The second pitch competition was generously hosted by the 11/11 Veteran Project. The prize for this competition was the opportunity to have your business logo on the side of Colin Garret's race car, with additional promotional opportunities provided (a $10,000 value).

This year's pitches were extremely competitive, and we applaud all those who participated. In the business pitch competition, Bruggeman (Work Truck) took first place ($2,500), Jathan Chicoine (Native Prairie Bison) took second place ($1,500), and Eric Polky (Kevo Fantasy Arts and Crafts) took third place ($1,000). In the 11/11 Veteran Project pitch competition, Jake Bruggeman was awarded first place and will have his logo placed on the side of Colin Garret's race car.

It was a pleasure to kick off the 2024 Iowa Veterans Entrepreneurship Conference with keynote speaker Allen Lazard (Wide Receiver for the New York Jets).
He shared about his foundation, At the Top for Veterans, and provided inspiration and encouragement to veterans and military personnel who are
reintegrating into civilian life.

“Pursue something that you love and don’t get emotionally tied to the results of it. Transitions are great because they allow for growth. Have the courage to lean into the opportunity.”

“Lean into the uncomfortable, ask for help. A lot of times, we get in our own way of success.”

TODAY IS THE DAY!!! We are excited to kick off the Iowa Veterans Entrepreneurship Conference. **PLEASE NOTE WE HAVE CHANGED THE CONFERENCE LOCATION!

The conference will now be held at Pivot Bio Customer Success Building (2600 S. Loop Drive, Ames, IA 50010), just down the road from the original location. There is free parking on site.

**This building is so new that a building icon doesn’t even appear on Google Maps – but it is there! We will have a large flag/banner (like those used at car dealerships) at the driveway – so you can’t miss us!!

The fourth breakout session will feature PEG MATTISON, MPA, owner of Mattisonweb LLC, Your Roof Doctor, and a faculty member at the Iowa State University - Ivy College of Business.

With all the work that goes into starting a business, there’s little time to think about marketing. Iowa Veterans Entrepreneurship Conference BREAKOUT SESSION SPOTLIGHT!

Curious about the exciting learning opportunities offered at this year's conference? The third breakout session will be led by Joseph Wallace, Partner/Managing Director of Hastings & Gartin Law Group, LLP, and Kyle Woiwood, CPA, Managing Director, Partner for UHY LLP, Certified Public Accountants.

What is the difference between a Sole Proprietorship, LLC, or an S-Corporation, and what do you need to know when starting a business? Attorney Joe Wallace will provide an overview of the different ways to structure and organize a company and why. He will also discuss other legal items such as agreements, avoiding and dealing with legal disputes, tax ramifications, registrations, and contracts.

During Accounting for Small Business, Kyle will cover the typical accounting/tax issues small businesses face when starting their own business, as well as accounting software and entity selection. Attendees will learn what financial statements are and what processes can be automated vs. must be done manually.
