This semester, one of the CyBIZ Lab teams worked with the Story County Community Foundation, a local philanthropic organization supporting Story County communities. The team had the opportunity to present their research and marketing recommendations to the Story County Community Foundation Advisory Board this week. CyBIZ Lab Team Wins Global Insurance Accelerator Student Competition for the Second Year in a Row!

On Thursday, September 11, a team of three Iowa State University CyBIZ Lab student consultants competed in the Global Insurance Accelerator (GIA) ACCELERATE Student Competition in downtown Des Moines. The event brought together student teams from Iowa State, the University of Iowa, and Drake University to experience a simulation of GIA’s mentor-matching process—a core element of their 100-Day accelerator program.

Working alongside a GIA mentor, each team was challenged to step into the shoes of Insurtech founders. Their task: develop a mentorship plan for a fictional early-stage Insurtech company, showing how carefully selected mentors could help the company grow and address key business challenges. Teams then presented their plans in a 3–5 minute pitch to a panel of judges.

The CyBIZ Lab team consisting of Alana Corwin, O’Neal Daniels, and Kaylee Shroyer, took first place in the competition, earning a $500 prize. A special shoutout to their mentor, Laurie Covington, Senior VP of Enterprise Strategic Planning at Homesteaders Life Company, whose guidance played a key role in the team’s success!

The GIA program is known for connecting passionate Insurtech founders with innovative insurance carriers, experienced mentors, and valuable networks through its hybrid 100-Day accelerator, which runs from January to April. This competition gave students a first-hand look at the role of mentorship in building stronger startups.

The 2025 Harvesting Innovation Case Competition challenged CyBIZ Lab students to tackle one of the industry’s most pressing issues: how to recycle and repurpose decommissioned wind turbine blades. Sponsored by REGEN Fiber, the event pushed students to design bold, defensible, and impactful business solutions that could transform recycled fibers into viable products and markets.

The winners of the competition include:
1st – Wind-Wise Solutions (Oriana Ryker, Kailee Shroyer, Gavin Hermanson, Imtiaz Chowdhury)
2nd – Breezy Does It (Addie Jennetten, Audry Castle, Haylie Moore)
3rd – Green Spin Alliance (Isabel Holzschuh, Wesley Behrens, Chloe Gregg)

Best Presenter Awards: O’Neal Daniels, Chloe Gregg, Gavin Hermanson, Isabel Holzschuh, Vasudha Arora & Haylie Moore
