The River Valley Veterans Network gathered last night at Beaverdale VFW Post 9127, and the room was alive with connection.

Conversations flowed — resources shared, opportunities explored — but the real highlight was the deepening sense of tribe, belonging, and community that makes these gatherings so meaningful.

We welcomed more than a dozen first‑time visitors, giving them a firsthand look at what an incredible organization Post 9127 is. Mike set the tone with a great rundown of the VFW’s inviting atmosphere — Veterans supporting Veterans, leading the community forward.

We were also fortunate to hear from Chad with the Reserve Component Transition Assistance Advisor Program, who shared updates on the programs he’s bringing across Iowa to support returning Guard Members with transition services.

thanks to Kevin and Jamie for talking about Veteran Career Services at each IowaWORKS office as well as Home Base Iowa programs and services!

A huge thank‑you to our sponsors, The Weitz Company — John (and mini John!) and Megan — for showing up, leaning in, and helping make the room feel like home. And appreciation to Brad for bringing information on Laborers' Local 177 — excellent opportunities for members of our community.

Next up: our June gathering in Ames at Torrent Brewing Company on June 17th.

Looking forward to keeping this momentum going and welcoming even more Veterans, families, and supporters into the network.

Kari from Visiting Angels captured even more great moments from our 5/20 gathering — thank you for helping us showcase the energy, connection, and camaraderie that make these events so meaningful.

I did not mention the beautiful Veteran Mural that was unveiled in downtown Ames... Along with the other amazing murals going up, be sure to visit this piece of art - "Descending Strength, Ascending Peace" by artist Chris Bennett - https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1Ba8LPS3ew/

Our monthly Ames gathering returns — always a fantastic mix of networking, resource sharing, and genuine camaraderie. Employers and community partners are encouraged to join and connect with Iowa’s Veteran talent.

These events continue to grow because of the people who show up, support one another, and help spread the word. Whether you’re a Veteran, a family member, a community partner, or someone who simply believes in supporting those who’ve served, you’re part of this network.

Are you curious about what our events look like when you come?
The fun part is talking to everyone in the room - especially those who you have yet to meet... There is an answer to an issue someone is dealing with, that they have yet to put words to, in the room each night... Plus, it is great fun sharing stories of our time in the service!

On Wednesday evening, Veterans, Guard and Reserve Members, resource organizations, and corporate partners came together for an evening of connection, conversation, and community. It was the kind of gathering that reminds you why these networks matter — a room full of people who’ve served, supported, and stood alongside one another.

Thank you to our Sponsor American Packaging Corporation from Story City and Host Torrent Brewing CompanyBrewing! The pasta buffet from The Silver Spoon Catering was amazing!

We were honored to have Iowa National Guard Members recently returned from deployment join us and share their experiences, challenges, and insights since coming home. Their voices added depth and meaning to the night.

Story County, Iowa Veteran Service Officer Zach walked us through why every Veteran should stop in and meet with their County VSO. With so many lists, websites, and scattered resources out there, VSOs help cut through the noise and make sure Veterans get connected to the right benefits. Programs like Home Base Iowa — with housing grants and community incentives across nearly all 99 counties — are just one example of the support available. IowaWorks for Veterans

We also heard from Tony with the Private Public Partnership (P3), who shared how the Army Reserve supports Soldiers, Family Members, and Veterans through nationwide employment services and training partnerships. Another outstanding resource for Iowa’s workforce and business community. https://www.usar.army.mil/P3/Findlocalsupport/

There are so many organizations ready to support those who have served — including our Police, Fire, and First Responders. Nights like this make it clear: when we come together, we strengthen the entire community.

It was great seeing the Student President from the Veterans group at Iowa State University!
Military-Affiliated Student Center at Iowa State University

It is always great to hear about American Legion of Iowa's Be The One from Ames Commander Cliff! He engages with such passion!

Next Wednesday, May 27th, we are at Beaverdale VFW Post 9127!
