ISU FIRE Prescribed Fire Research, Training, and Management

We are primarily focused on conducting prescribed fires as treatments for fire-grazing research in southern Iowa & northern Missouri's Grand River Grasslands. Through these operations, as well as prescribed fire operations with collaborating state, federal, and private agencies, we provide opportunities for team members to participate in fire training and gain practical experience in wildland fire management.

A finalized date for the S-130 / S-190 / L-180 course offering at Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge: Friday November 2nd 8AM - 5PM. You will need to complete the online courses prior to the field exercise day. No cost - this is a great opportunity to get the basic training! Pass it on to folks you think might be interested, have them contact Ryan Harr!

Hey ISU Fire folks: if anyone is interested, there is a new offering of the S-212 Wildland Fire Chainsaws course coming up Oct 16-19th in Rock Island Illinois. It is put on by Illinois Fire Service Institute, but may be a bit cost-prohibitive. Talk to me if you want more information!

Hey gang - for anyone interested, The Nature Conservancy's Kyle Lapham is coordinating an S-130/S-190 introduction to wildland fire training in the Loess Hills this fall. If you know anyone interested, they'll need to complete the online portion first, then attend the field day in Neola, Iowa on Saturday, October 13th.

Grand River Grasslands research fires complete on April 6th, concluding with 286 acres at the Ringgold WMA. Nearly 1,000 acres in 30 days! Thanks to ISU Fire 2012 crew, Iowa DNR, USFWS, and other partners!

LAST CHANCES to get in a pack test for spring 2012 in Iowa! This Saturday, 0900hours at ICCC in Fort Dodge, or Wednesday April 4th at State Forest Nursery in Ames...2 sessions there, at 1000 and 1100hrs respectively. Let Ryan know if you want to get it in yet this spring!

Kellerton North and Hoffman Tract on March 13: 28 and 36 acres respectively. 30+ trees felled, bucked and spread (fuels prep) on March 14th. Ringgold South (22 ac) and Sterner (90 ac) burned March 15th. Great 3-day roll to southern Iowa!
