When I heard that ChatGPT had passed a Wharton Business School test, it piqued my curiosity: can ChatGPT create documents for indie filmmakers? Due to the limited legalese and my understanding that a letter of intent (LOI) is not a binding contract, I started with an LOI. LOIs are essential tools in the film industry, outlining the basics of a proposed collaboration between a director (talent) and a production company, and helping to clarify expectations, facilitate negotiations, and inform distributors and financiers of the talent's interest in your project.

In the early stages of my career, I would either beg, borrow, or steal to raise funds for an entertainment lawyer to draw up legal agreements and contracts, tirelessly track down a sample document through my network, or even purchase a useless indie film contract kit from a random website. However, I put ChatGPT to the test and was impressed with the first response generated. While I've seen many iterations of LOIs over my career, this one had most of the pertinent info. After asking the AI to add a clause about using the talent's name to shop the project and making a few minor tweaks, I was satisfied with the result. The template provided a great starting point for independent filmmakers who want to streamline the early stages of film production and save time and resources.

Although a letter of intent is not a binding contract, it can lay the groundwork for a successful collaboration, especially when time and resources are limited. As technology continues to evolve, the use of AI in the film industry will likely become more prevalent, paving the way for new opportunities for innovation and creativity. Maybe down the road, I’ll try a more complex contract. Below I’ve linked the resulting template.

As Head of Distribution for Buffalo 8, Justice helps to champion diverse voices and support the independent filmmaking community. Justice also teaches at UConn in the Digital Media & Design Department.
