Red Electric

Red Electric Energy. Tension. Beauty. How it all began....

Red Electric Wines was an accident waiting to happen.

In September 2015, Doug and Michele Ackerman realized they had an extra ton and a half of organic, dry-farmed Armstrong Pinot Noir without a home. Our first thought was to ask old friend and über-talented winemaker John Grochau if he was interested in the fruit. John, who first got his teeth purple up the road at Brick House Winery, jumped at the chance to work with Ribbon Ridge fruit. While tasti

ng the barrels, both John and Doug had a common vision regarding the ultimate wine: a wine of tension, energy and richness in a tight frame. The result was 120 cases of wine that triggered an epiphany: we’re on to something special. We quickly decided to produce the 2015 under a new label, and founded Red Electric Wines. We like to say that the name Red Electric was shamelessly hijacked from the Oregon electric trains that ran from Portland through the Willamette Valley in the early 1900s, and stopped at all the towns you now associate with outstanding Oregon Pinot Noir. While the red electric trains were decommissioned in 1929, the name lives on in the form of elegant, energetic wines from Armstrong Vineyard in Ribbon Ridge.

Decanter Magazine has weighed in on the 2023 Red Electric Wines!

95 Points:  Alpine Lily Chardonnay
93 Points:  Evening Primrose Chardonnay
94 Points:  Interurban Pinot Noir
93 Points:  Pulse Pinot Noir
94 Points: TGV Pinot Noir

“Structured and and built as an age-worthy Pinot Noir by winemaker John Grochau….”

“An electric and bright red Pinot Noir coming from the Armstrong Vineyard in the Ribbon Ridge Appellation”

“Racy and electric this Pinot Noir…shows the savory side”

These are just a few comments we received from the reviews our 23’s received this week from Clive Pursehouse in this month’s Decanter.

The wines are reflective of both place and vintage, and are drinking beautifully already.  The Pulse and TGV explode after a brief decant (no pun intended).

These wines will make wonderful Holiday gifts and will slide nicely into your Thanksgiving plans.

Come visit us at https://www.redelectricwines.com or shoot us a message at [email protected] if you’d like to try some of these wines.  We can hook you up.

As busy as harvest gets, it’s fun to spice it up occasionally and ‘invite a friend to work’ for the day. Andre, a former colleague of Doug’s, traded a day of retirement last week to work a day of harvest.

They started the day early at Armstong Vineyard. As crews expertly picked tons of fruit, Andre was shown how to sort through harvested fruit and remove unripe berries and leaves. Once all the necessary blocks were picked and everyone enjoyed a hearty lunch of ‘harvest dogs’, the work continued with a trip to the winery in Amity. There Andre performed barefoot pigage (punching down) on some previously harvested fruit. From vineyard to winery, Andre was involved from head to toe and is officially a part of the 2025 vintage. Thanks for helping out, Andre!

Rise and shine! Full harvest mode last week included some predawn picks. During harvest season, things move quickly - you act fast when the fruit is ripe and the crews are running from one vineyard to another so you make it work - headlamps are a must. Even the roosters next door wonder what all the hubbub is all about.

It’s never too early to celebrate! A toast to the 2025 vintage, as harvest gets underway for Red Electric. Our first pick of Pinot Noir was a bit earlier than usual, but we are delighted with the fruit. We delivered 5 tons of fruit to the winery Saturday, and have 4 beautiful fermenters starting their journeys into wine: 3 fermenters fully destemmed; one fermenter 50% whole cluster. We’re off to a great start!

The Armstrong Vineyard tasting on Thursday night got these three fine winemakers in one room for the evening. It was a rare treat to sit down with Tom, Vincent and John and taste verticals of their wines. It was fascinating to have them retell their experiences with each harvest and vintage. This was followed by a leisurely walk around tasting - such an educational and enjoyable experience!
