Before judging someone's behavior, it may be worth asking: "What might I not know?"

We see people's actions, but we don't always see the experiences, cultural influences, fears, values, assumptions, or circumstances behind them. A little curiosity can prevent a great deal of unnecessary judgment.

Sometimes understanding begins when we recognize that our perspective is only one perspective. That's one of the central ideas behind my book, “Hidden Filters.”

Two leaders can examine the same organization and reach very different conclusions. One may see employees who lack initiative or experience; another may see people who have never been given sufficient authority. One may see resistance to change; another may recognize legitimate concerns that have not been heard.

We do not evaluate organizations from a completely neutral position. Our culture, personality, age, experience, expectations, and assumptions influence what we notice—and what we overlook.

Effective leadership begins by asking: What filters may be influencing the way I see this situation?
