Open Position: Bookkeeper/Business Assistant

Wapsi Valley Archaeology, Inc. seeks a part-time Bookkeeper to assist with managing the day-to-day accounting and finance functions of the business. Confidentiality, excellent organization skills, and accuracy are important. Attention to detail and factual care are a must. In addition, interest in anthropology, archaeology, architecture, history, and historic preservation are helpful.

Responsibilities will include:
Updating day-to-day expenses of the business using QuickBooks
Documenting and transmitting archaeology-related project data
Tracking and preparing client invoices
Preparing quarterly reports on profit/loss, cash flow, and balances using QuickBooks
Organizing project-related information to assist with budgeting

The applicant should have at minimum an AA or BA/BS in accounting or a related degree, or have a working knowledge of accounting and finance practices. Further, the applicant will have experience working with accounts payable/receivable, payroll reports, or finance management. Experience with excel is a must. Experience with QuickBooks is a plus.

This position will be on an as needed basis, paid at $20.00 an hour. Work will be completed at our office in Anamosa.

PRINCIPAL INVESITIGATOR – HISTORIAN / ARCHITECTURAL HISTORIAN

Wapsi Valley Archaeology, Inc. has an immediate opening for a Historian/Architectural Historian to join our professional team.

Wapsi Valley Archaeology, Inc. is a growing cultural resources services firm that serves Iowa and surrounding states. This position involves project-based research including survey and analysis in architecture, historic preservation, and cultural resource management. Candidates must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s professional qualifications standards for History or Architectural History. This position requires a Master’s degree in architectural history, history, art history, historic preservation, or a closely related field. Other requirements include at least two years’ experience supervising and completing historic/architectural reconnaissance surveys, intensive surveys and determinations of eligibility, and successful nominations to the National Register of Historic Places, preferably in the Midwest at the Principal Investigator level. Excellent writing skills are a must. Nuanced understanding of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act is also required. Knowledge of HABS/HAER documentation, oral history interviews, GIS, and design of public outreach booklets and exhibits is desirable.

Responsibilities will include:

• Research, fieldwork, analysis, and product preparation for specific research projects, including writing of technical reports, National Register nominations, and public outreach publications.

• Identification, documentation, and evaluation of resources for Section 106 and National Register nomination purposes based on field examination, architectural history knowledge, use of published sources, background/archival research at the State Historic Preservation Office and libraries, and writing detailed descriptions of resources using professional terminology.

• Documentation of buildings and structures according to professional standards, including photography and descriptions of architectural details.

• Supervision of support staff in carrying out completion of projects.

• Authoring technical reports that meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and Guidelines for Historic Preservation and the standards and requirements of state, federal, and county agencies and Wapsi Valley Archaeology, Inc. management.

• Historic research on architectural and archaeological properties to assist with interpretations and historic context development.

• Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and complete work under tight, competing deadlines.

• Strong computer skills, communication skills, organizational skills, and ability to work cooperatively as part of a collaborative team.

• Travel as necessary for projects, mainly within the state of Iowa.
