Big news!

After months of working out the details we are excited to share that NAMI is coming to Umoja!
They will be joining us as new anchor tenant and community partner.

They will be open for business starting in July

We are excited to welcome their services and work to northeast Anchorage and look forward to valuable connections to service all of Anchorage.

After careful thought and consideration—reflecting on our original goals, current operations, and the realities of our capacity—we’ve recognized that managing the building side of our organization has grown beyond what our board and volunteers can sustainably support.

We are deeply committed to Umoja’s future and want to ensure it continues to serve, grow, and thrive within our community. To do that, we need to make some immediate and necessary changes:

• We will evaluate unused spaces to bring them online for anchor tenants (if you have medium or large needs lets us know and let’s see how we can work together)

• Reassess our pricing and income structures to remain both affordable but sustainable (this means we will do our best to keep prices affordable, but unfortunately, we cannot comp all rentals)

• Upgrade to a new booking and management system to streamline memberships and rentals

• Contract a professional property manager to support operations

If you or someone you know is interested in leasing a larger space at Umoja, or in contributing time and expertise to help with operations on a scheduled regular basis, we would greatly appreciate your support.

We recognize that many nonprofits across the city and state are facing similar challenges. However, we believe it’s important not to wear burnout as a badge of honor. Taking care of our physical and mental health is essential—because if we’re not well, we can’t effectively serve our community.

Umoja is doing and helping a lot, and we’re proud of the impact—but we truly need all hands on deck to continue this work or we risk deciding its best to close the Coworking building part of our work to ensure we have enough bandwidth to continue supporting our families, businesses, and other community events and ventures.
