Meet Jess Sweeney. Jess is the Vice President of Operations and Strategy at Nokomis, where she wears many hats: project manager, systems builder, data analyst, and community facilitator. Before joining Nokomis, Jess spent a decade at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, where she built cross-agency partnerships and helped stand up national public health infrastructure.

Jess grew up in the Pacific Northwest and attended the University of Puget Sound. After college, she spent a year working on maternal and child health in Guatemala, an experience that taught her the importance of stepping outside your comfort zone, and the power of community-driven strategy in making change stick on the ground. She went on to earn her Master of Public Administration at the University of Georgia, where she met her husband and built her early career in Atlanta.

When she's not writing proposals or building Airtable interfaces, Jess loves baking, biking around the city, being a politics ju**ie, and spending time with her husband Kyle, daughter Ruby, and their cute little mutt, Neville.

Here is a little "behind the scenes" at Nokomis Strategies. While most of us work fully remotely, we appreciate when we can come together to tackle a project for one of the communities we serve. Less than 50 years ago today, Congress passed the American Indian Religious Freedom Act that was designed to finally outlaw the bias and harsh laws that prevented Native people from practicing their religion and spirituality openly and publicly. Heinous atrocities were committed by the federal government like Wounded Knee to prevent and punish those practicing Indigenous religions. It was on this day that Congress finally took action to ban those practices. While the law is far from perfect today, Nokomis Strategies encourages everyone to take pride in their inherent right: celebrate your beliefs and openly pass them on to the next generation.

This Sunday we add our voice to the chorus of voices protecting and promoting Indigenous peoples during International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples (IDWIP). We repeat: We are here.

This IDWIP day, we celebrate the theme of "Honoring Indigenous Midwives: Safeguarding Life and Well-being." We lift up not only the heritage of our team members and partners, but also the midwives of those communities that continue to possess ancestorial ways and keep our traditions alive. May our customs always be protected to be passed on to the next generation.

The Rural Health Transformation Program is one of the most ambitious rural health investments in recent memory, and Nokomis Strategies is proud to partner with implementers across Indian Country to ensure their ambitions are met.

Transformation is a big word. In rural and remote communities, it is also a heavy one. The distance between a funding announcement and real change in a community is measured not just in miles but in relationships, systems, trust, and time. The organizations best positioned to do this work are the ones that already understand what implementation looks like inside a tribal health system or across a region where the nearest specialist is hours away.

Nokomis Strategies has spent years working alongside Tribal Nations, Alaska Native organizations, nonprofits, healthcare providers and public health agencies doing exactly that kind of work. We know how to build something from the ground up, and we know how to step into a program that is already moving and help it find its footing. RHTP funding is reaching organizations at very different stages of readiness, and we are built to meet each of them where they are.

If RHTP is on your radar like it is on ours, we would love to talk about what the right partnership could look like for your organization. Contact us at [email protected] or call us at (907) 300-2742.
