Alaska's transportation priorities are taking shape, and there's still time to weigh in!

The Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities is seeking public input on the Draft 2027–2030 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP), which outlines planned transportation investments across the state.

Public comments are open through October 29. Whether you have an interest in roads, bridges, trails or other transportation improvements, this is an opportunity to help shape Alaska's transportation future.

Alaska’s coastal communities are experiencing changing conditions that directly affect the infrastructure they depend on.

This video from Engineering News-Record looks at major storms affecting Western Alaska and the challenges they create for communities throughout the region.

It’s a story that resonates with R&M’s work in Kwethluk, Kipnuk, Chefornak, Eek, Toksook Bay, Kotlik and other rural Alaska communities. Designing infrastructure in these areas means accounting for thawing permafrost, coastal erosion, flooding, extreme weather and other conditions that can affect everything from foundations and utilities to roads and other critical infrastructure.

Understanding these challenges is an important part of developing resilient solutions that meet community needs now and into the future.

Gabe Benitez, EIT and Long Nguyen, EIT, CESCL have joined R&M as Staff Engineers.

Gabe joins our Water Resources Group and will be based in our Wasilla office. He brings six years of engineering and natural resources experience, with a background in water resources, hydrology, hydraulics, drainage design and geospatial analysis.

Long joins our Construction Services Department, bringing more than 20 years of construction engineering, inspection and administration experience on transportation infrastructure projects throughout Alaska.

Seward’s new cruise ship terminal is officially welcoming passengers!

R&M served as the owner’s representative and provided comprehensive quality assurance services throughout construction of the new terminal and floating double-berth pier. From daily construction observations and special inspections to materials testing acceptance and verification of contractor quality control efforts, our team maintained a consistent field presence throughout the fast-paced project.

R&M is looking for a Senior Project Civil Engineer to join our Utilities Group.

Bring your experience to water and sewer infrastructure projects that serve communities across Alaska. In this senior role, you’ll lead design efforts, collaborate with clients and project teams, and mentor engineering staff.

Minimum qualifications:
✔ B.S. in Civil Engineering
✔ 15+ years of civil engineering experience, with an emphasis on utilities
✔ Alaska PE or ability to obtain within six months
✔ Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D

A major milestone for a project our team has been working on for several years!

R&M is the designer for Stage 1B, the easternmost segment of the Sterling Highway MP 45-60 Project. Our multi-discipline team is contributing roadway design, surveying and mapping, geotechnical engineering, hydrology and hydraulics, permitting, utility coordination, right of way, public involvement and CM/GC support.

The Juneau Creek Bridge, designed by the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities Bridge Section, is an impressive piece of the larger project. Check out this Alaska Business feature for a look at the bridge, the Cooper Landing bypass and the work taking shape along the Sterling Highway.

After years of work in the wilderness, one of the state’s largest road projects in history is now more visible to drivers on the Sterling Highway.

Collin Hodges, AICP has joined R&M’s Planning Department as a Senior Planner, bringing 15 years of experience in multimodal transportation, land use and community planning.

Collin recently returned to Alaska after spending six years on the East Coast. Prior to leaving Alaska, he worked for the Municipality of Anchorage as a Senior Planner and Transit Planner. At R&M, he will support transportation, land use and community planning projects throughout the state.
