A new enterprise. A housing project. Infrastructure. Energy development. A community facility.

But getting from the idea to something real can require planning, funding, technical expertise, engineering and the right partners.

The challenge is often figuring out how all the pieces come together.

A promising business opportunity isn't automatically a good Tribal enterprise.

Before committing money, know who will buy, what it will cost to start and operate, how the Tribe benefits, and what happens if the business doesn't perform as promised.

And ask one more question:

Who independently tested the numbers?

The goal isn't to find reasons to say no. It's to know what you're saying yes to.

Selecting a partner.
Pursuing government contracting.
Investing in infrastructure.

The common thread isn't the project.

It's the quality of the questions asked before the decision is made.

Better questions lead to better decisions. Better decisions build stronger Tribal futures.

That's a lot of enterprise happening beyond the paths we hear about most.

The Tribe takes the risk. Tribal leadership should always know who has control.

Vet the opportunity, the partner, and the consultants bringing partners to the table. Understand who benefits and how.

Ask the hard questions. Require reporting. Know who is accountable.

Ownership isn't enough. Stay at the table.

Before launching a Tribal enterprise, ask four questions:

✓ Is decision-making authority clear?
✓ Are financial controls in place?
✓ Is leadership aligned?
✓ Does your organization have the capacity to support it?

Strong enterprises are built on strong foundations.

The opportunity isn't always the risk. Sometimes the foundation is.
