Amazing leadership absolutely paid off!

Capital City Fire/Rescue would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the City Manager’s Office, CBJ Assembly, Tlingit & Haida, the EOC Command Team, and all staff who worked tirelessly in the year leading up to the recent flooding event.

Your pre-incident planning, flood preparations, and the acquisition and installation of the Hesco Barriers on the Mendenhall River were nothing short of exceptional. Because of your dedication, our community avoided what certainly would have been tens of millions of dollars in damages.

Thanks to these proactive measures, CCFR did not respond to a single emergency evacuation or rescue during the rising flooding — a remarkable testament to the effectiveness of the planning, partnerships, and teamwork involved.

This was a true community success story, and every person involved should be proud of the averted disaster. We are grateful for your leadership, foresight, and commitment to protecting Juneau.

Thank you to Daforge Marine and Fairweather Sciences for the support on this one.

The Draft Hazard Mitigation Plan for the 2025 City & Borough of Juneau and Tlingit & Haida Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan Update is available for public review and comment until July 25.

View the draft plan, learn more about the project and find out how to share your comments at https://juneau.org/newsroom-item/draft-hazard-mitigation-plan-now-available-for-public-review-and-comment.

What is Hazard Mitigation?
Hazard Mitigation refers to any sustained action taken to reduce or eliminate the long-term risk to life and/or property from natural hazards.

So then... what is Hazard Mitigation Planning?

Hazard mitigation planning refers to the ongoing strategic process to identify and assess potential threats to life and property, evaluate local mitigation actions, and make a plan to implement those actions. Without hazard mitigation, more damage would be done during a disaster, impacts would be costlier, and it would be harder for our communities to recover from them. Public input is critical to this process.
