What is a tailings storage facility, and how will it work at Donlin Gold?

Tailings are the material left after gold is separated from mined rock. Donlin Gold’s proposed tailings storage facility will be designed to safely contain and manage that material over the long term. The facility will use a downstream rockfill dam built on bedrock, along with a synthetic liner and systems to collect and manage water. It is engineered to withstand a large-magnitude earthquake and will be regularly monitored and inspected throughout operations.

When mining is complete, water will be removed from the facility, and the tailings will be covered with rock and soil and revegetated.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has released the Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement for the Donlin Gold project and is leading the federal review and public comment process.

Released Sept. 23, the Draft SEIS examines the potential effects of a larger hypothetical release from the proposed tailings storage facility than was analyzed in the project’s 2018 Environmental Impact Statement. The supplemental review provides additional analysis requested through the federal process and does not change the proposed tailings storage facility design.

Donlin Gold recognizes how important clean water, fish and the lands and waters of the Yukon-Kuskokwim region are to communities. Preventing a release is central to the project’s approach to tailings management. The proposed facility uses a downstream rockfill dam built on bedrock, along with a synthetic liner, seepage collection and monitoring systems designed to identify changing conditions early.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is accepting public comments on the Draft SEIS through Oct. 23, 2026. The Corps will also hold public meetings and Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act Section 810 hearings in the Yukon-Kuskokwim region beginning Oct. 14.

Water is part of everyday life across the Yukon-Kuskokwim region, and having the right safety gear matters.

Through our Summer Safety Program, Donlin Gold continued its annual life jacket distribution with visits to Atmautluak, Kasigluk and Nunapitchuk. The program helps support safer days on the water for local boaters and families. Thank you to everyone who welcomed our team during this year’s visits. 🌊

Fish. Water. Subsistence. They’re part of everyday life in the Yukon-Kuskokwim region, and protecting them has helped shape Donlin Gold’s planning. For more than 25 years, studies have documented water, fish, aquatic habitat, wildlife and subsistence use to inform project design and long-term monitoring. Plans include managing and treating water to meet Alaska water quality standards and continuous and long-term monitoring of water, fish and aquatic habitat.

There’s a lot happening at Donlin Gold, and we want to keep you informed about where the project stands today.

Donlin Gold remains in the development stage. Right now, our work is focused on environmental monitoring, engineering, technical studies and updated feasibility work — the detailed planning and analysis that will help inform decisions about the project’s future. No decision has been made to begin construction. Currently, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is leading a Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement process, which will include additional analysis and opportunities for public participation.

As this work continues, so will our conversations across the Yukon-Kuskokwim region. This project has developed step by step over many years, and we’ll keep showing up, sharing information, answering questions and listening to the people who know this region best.

From workforce development to water safety, here’s a look at what’s been happening at Donlin Gold and across the Y-K region:

🦺 Supporting safer days on the water: For more than 10 years, Donlin Gold has promoted water safety through its annual life jacket distribution effort. This summer, our team traveled to Atmautluak, Kasigluk and Nunapitchuk to hand-deliver life jackets and help boaters travel more safely along local waterways.

👷 Building for the region’s future: Donlin Gold has created a dedicated Workforce Development department to strengthen our focus on employment, training, career pathways and long-term workforce readiness.

💧 Following the water: We take a closer look at how water will be managed at the proposed Donlin Gold project, from more than 20 years of baseline data to treatment, monitoring and post-closure planning.

👷‍♀️ Growing the local workforce: Brenda Pacarro has been promoted to Workforce & Shareholder Development Manager and will lead Donlin Gold’s expanded workforce development efforts.

🚁 Field work update: Limited geotechnical work is underway along select areas of the proposed natural gas pipeline route to better understand ground conditions and support future planning and engineering.

🔦 Safety moment: With daylight changing quickly across Alaska, remember to stay visible, use lights before dark and take extra care near roads, trails and river access areas.
