A background check confirms paperwork, not a person.

Synthetic identity fraud doesn't steal someone's identity. It builds one. A real, valid Social Security number is matched to an AI-generated face, a fabricated name, and a forged document set. No single real person owns all of those details, so nothing contradicts anything, and that is exactly why it clears verification. The name, the number and the photo all agree with each other.

Complete packages reportedly sell for as little as $200.

This lands hardest in Alaska, where the person doing the checking is usually a small landlord, a small employer, or a private party across the table: working from a printed page and a phone call, not a security team.

So the useful question isn't whether the documents look right.

It's what your verification actually proves, and whether someone who doesn't exist could satisfy it.

Ten red flags is nine too many.

The tell is not the uniform. It is not the photos, and it is not the deployment story. Service members deploy, and photos and orders can be forged.

The tell is two things: the money request, and the move to another app.

A real service member will not ask a person they met online to send money, gift cards, or crypto. And official channels do not require you to move the conversation to WhatsApp, Telegram, or Google Chat, where messages can be deleted.

If someone claims to be in the military, verify them through official channels, not through documents they send you.

Alaska has large military communities, and service members and their families here are targeted the same way anyone else is.

Alaska keeps a public list of missing Alaska Native and American Indian people.

The dates of last contact reach back to the 1960s. A person listed with a 1960 date has been missing for more than sixty years.

The record is published quarterly by the Alaska Department of Public Safety. It exists as an instrument of transparency in a state where, as 2019 reporting by ProPublica and the Anchorage Daily News found, more than a third of villages had no regular law-enforcement presence. Reaching a site may depend on aircraft, weather and a river route instead of a road.

Village Public Safety Officer staffing has grown from 38 officers in 2021 to 90 across 57 villages as of May 2026. That is progress. It does not clear the older cases still on the list.

Our article examines what the record shows, why cases stay open, and what families can do in the first hours. There is no waiting period to report someone missing in Alaska. Report immediately, at any age, in any circumstance.

The article lists NamUs, the DPS active missing-person list, the troopers' anonymous tip line and your own tribal council.

Alaska Investigations Group is a licensed private investigations agency. We do not replace law enforcement. The primary investigation belongs with the agency that has jurisdiction, and no outcome can be promised.

A lookup is a lead, not a current answer.

Old skip-trace searches can quietly lose accuracy as data brokers process privacy opt-outs, deletion requests, and changing state requirements.

Alaska adds practical gaps. Some communities do not use conventional street addresses. Mail may move through a PO box or village drop. Seasonal work and rotation schedules can also change where someone can be reached.

Before relying on a result, verify two current primary sources and write down the date checked. Confirm the person’s identity, contact details, and whether the information is current.

That matters when you are trying to locate someone or check a person’s history. It also matters to attorneys and businesses reviewing a background report. A database result should be checked against current records and local context, not treated as final.
