With the conclusion of this afternoon’s webinar, REAP’s 2026 Spring Energy Speaker Series is officially in the books!

Over the past few months, we’ve gathered hundreds of our fellow Alaskans for in-depth conversations with subject matter experts on important topics ranging from gas supply and heating to the connection between Alaska’s food and energy systems, challenges and opportunities for further developing Alaska’s clean energy workforce, and the potential value Unified Economic Dispatch could bring to the Railbelt grid.

For future reference, you can access recordings from prior REAP events and our other various initiatives on our YouTube channel here: https://www.youtube.com//featured

Thank you once again to everyone who expressed interest in these four public events and to CIRI for their generous sponsorship that made this series possible.

We hope you enjoyed this series, and we hope these events serve as a starting point for continued discussion about these important topics.

On that note, please let us know if you would like to help us organize similar events as part of REAP’s 2026 Fall Energy Speaker Series or if you would be interested in helping us fund that effort as a Series sponsor.

Until then, thank you for your support and engagement with important Alaska energy issues!

Railbelt ratepayers are already feeling the sting of rising energy costs due to dwindling supplies of Cook Inlet gas. And as has been widely reported, the region’s electric utilities are stepping into the global market for natural gas to bridge the gap, just as we watch global fossil fuel prices rise and grow more volatile. 📈

But what many folks do not know is that there may be institutional changes and innovation that can blunt projected cost increases and even save Railbelt ratepayers tens of millions of dollars annually. 💸

That is why REAP is proud to host its final 2026 Spring Energy Speaker Series event on one such concept: Unified Economic Dispatch – a coordinated system for generating and distributing power among the Railbelt’s utilities to minimize electricity costs and improve grid resilience. 🤝

This free webinar will give attendees a basic understanding of: 🧑‍🏫
* What Unified Economic Dispatch (UED) is;
* Benefits that UED could bring to Alaska ratepayers;
* Examples of ways that UED has been utilized elsewhere in the U.S.; and
* How a UED model might be crafted to fit Alaska’s Railbelt region.

We hope you will join us for this important virtual discussion from Noon to 1pm this Thursday, May 21st. Learn more and register for free here: https://alaskarenewableenergy.org/event/2026-spring-energy-speaker-series-toward-a-more-efficient-railbelt/ 🔗

This year, 171 students representing 55 teams from 12 communities across Alaska participated in REAP's annual Clean Energy Olympics. And for the first time ever, we expanded the statewide competition to include an in-person gathering for Southeast teams in Juneau. 🏅

After reviewing the results from the wind turbine design competition, solar home showcase, instant challenge, and knowledge test, we are excited to announce that five Alaska teams have officially been invited to compete at the 2026 World KidWind Project Challenge in Madison, Wisconsin, later this month! ✈️

With generous financial support from the Office of Naval Research and the Mat-Su Health Foundation, REAP is proud to offer each team stipends that will help them partially cover the costs of travel and lodging for the international competition. But each team still has a ways to go before they have the funds necessary to attend and compete. We are actively fundraising with them to fill the gap, and we hope you will consider pitching in to help make their dream a reality. 💫

One of those teams is “Breezie Besties” from Wasilla. Please take a moment to check out their team page to learn more about them, their design, and how you can help them make it to Madison 🔗: https://kidwind.org/team/breezie-besties/

Please also help us spread the word by sharing this post with others you know who support our engagement with Alaska’s future energy leaders. 🔊

Thank you so much! 💗
