The Value in Deriving a Project Schedule from an Estimate

Earned Value Management or “EVM” is the process of comparing the actual project work completed versus the work that was originally planned. This comparison is then used to forecast the remaining duration and cost for the project to be completed. An accurate estimate, mutually agreed upon schedule, and comprehensive cost control system are the three key ingredients for successful EVM implementation.
Proper Earned Value Management provides summation metrics using accurate and updated field data. This allows project managers, coordinators, or executives to easily, and quickly, understand the status of their ongoing projects without the hassle of digging through the details. Superior project insight leads to better decision making when projects need it most.
Earned Value Management helps improve cost mitigation, the timely capture of changes or trends, more accurate forecasts, and much more. EVM also assists in securing project historical data in an organized manner. Past performance metrics can then be used to improve estimate precision on future projects.

What is a direct cost versus an indirect cost in a project cost estimate?

Direct costs are any labor, subcontractor, or material dollars that directly contribute to the permanent installation of the project. An example of direct costs might be the discipline craft labor to install a process module with electrical and piping interconnects. Materials could be the structural steel, piping, or electrical cable that are permanently installed on the project. All these would be considered a direct cost to the project since the expenses occur at the project site during construction and the work and materials used in construction stay on site after construction.

Indirect costs are any labor or material dollars that support the project but do not directly contribute to the permanent installation of the project. An example of indirect costs may include items such as contractor staff, temporary facilities (power, water, etc.), snow removal, equipment, scaffold, and any other contractor labor needed on the project that does not actually remain as part of the permanent installation. Some material examples may include dunnage, material for temporary supports, erosion prevention products and cabling, or piping for temporary facilities. Other indirect cost items could include crew airfare, lodging, car rental(s), security fencing, barricades, or signage.
