As students head back to school, learning is also in session at Sierra Pacific Industries.

Through SPI's STEP (Skills Training and Education Program), employees continue developing their skills and knowledge year-round because learning doesn't stop when you enter the workforce. From leadership and communication to specialized trades training, STEP helps employees grow throughout their careers.

Leading many of those classes are instructors who bring decades of real-world experience to the classroom.

Chris Saeger, STEP Millwright Instructor, comes from a family with deep roots in the logging and sawmill industry and has spent more than 25 years building a career as a millwright. After working throughout the forest products industry and serving in maintenance leadership roles, he now shares his passion for the trade by helping develop the next generation of skilled millwrights.

Kurt Haywood, STEP Electrical Instructor, served as an Electronics Technician in the U.S. Navy before building a career in electronics, manufacturing, and industrial electrical systems. Since joining SPI in 2017, he has advanced through the electrical department and now helps train future Industrial Electricians through the STEP program.

Together, Chris and Kurt exemplify SPI's commitment to investing in people and passing knowledge from one generation to the next.

Meet the Team: IT Department 💻

When most people think of Sierra Pacific Industries, they think of forests, mills, and trucks. Behind the scenes, a team of nearly 60 technology professionals works every day to keep the company connected, secure, and running efficiently across 34 states.

As a critical piece of SPI's vertical integration, our IT team allows the company to respond quickly to evolving business needs because the expertise is built and maintained in-house. Rather than relying solely on outside vendors, our developers, network engineers, cybersecurity specialists, system administrators, operators, and help desk professionals work directly with employees across the company to create solutions tailored specifically to our operations.

The team even developed SPACE (Sierra Pacific Advanced Computing Environment), an in-house platform that modernizes business processes with custom-built applications designed specifically for SPI. When evaluating new technologies and software, the team focuses on finding the best solution for our business, often building tools themselves to better meet the needs of our employees.

Their work reduces paperwork, streamlines processes, improves access to information, and helps teams throughout the company work more efficiently.

Technology may be their expertise, but service is their mission.

As summer comes to a close, we're proud to celebrate another successful internship season at Sierra Pacific Industries.

What began in 1989 with forestry inventory crews has grown into a program that has helped launch countless careers. In fact, two of our original interns from that first year are still with the company today.

This year, 35 interns joined SPI across California, Oregon, Washington, and Wisconsin, gaining hands-on experience in forestry, environmental services, engineering, manufacturing, wildlife, nursery operations, fabrication, cogeneration, and more. Together, they represented a wide range of degree programs and brought new ideas, energy, and enthusiasm to our operations.

Since 2020, SPI has welcomed more than 180 interns, helping students connect classroom learning with real-world experience while exploring careers in the forest products industry.

To our interns: thank you for your hard work and contributions this summer. Whether you're heading back for your sophomore, junior, or senior year, returning to graduate school, or preparing for the next step in your career, we wish you the very best and hope to see many of you back at SPI in the future.

The impact of Sierra Pacific Industries extends far beyond our own operations.

While SPI directly employs more than 6,700 crew members, our work also supports an estimated 19,430 additional jobs through suppliers, contractors, service providers, transportation partners, local businesses, and the many industries connected to forest products manufacturing.

These numbers represent thousands of families, careers, and communities that benefit from a strong forest products industry. From the forest to the mill and throughout the supply chain, the work we do together helps create economic opportunity and supports livelihoods across California, Oregon, Washington, and beyond.

At SPI, we're proud that our impact reaches beyond the gates of our facilities, helping strengthen communities and create opportunities for generations to come. 🌲

A house starts long before the foundation is poured.

From framing new neighborhoods to supporting growing communities, lumber remains one of the most essential building materials in America. Each year, our mills produce enough lumber to build approximately 211,000 new homes, helping meet the growing demand for housing across the country.

We wrapped up our final Forestry Institute for Teachers (FIT) tour of the year with the Shasta FIT program visiting our timberlands and the Burney mill, welcoming educators from across California for a firsthand look at sustainable forestry and modern manufacturing.

This year's participants represented communities throughout San Diego, Los Angeles, Sonoma County, the Bay Area, and Northern California, bringing together educators from diverse regions to learn more about the role forests play in our environment, economy, and everyday lives.

By connecting teachers with industry professionals and providing real-world experiences in the forest and mill, FIT helps bring forestry education back to classrooms across the state. We are grateful for the opportunity to share our operations and proud to support educators who inspire the next generation of learners.
