This week we celebrate our ROP student Daryn on her graduation from Calaveras High School! 🎓

Through the ROP program, students receive a hands-on introduction to the funeral profession, learning what it means to care for both the deceased and the families who entrust them to us during some of life’s most difficult moments.

Each year, we are blown away by the students who choose to spend time with us. Every one of them brings something unique, and Daryn was no exception.

Much of funeral service happens behind closed doors and often goes unseen, but it is work that requires maturity, compassion, respect, and professionalism. Over the past year, Daryn embraced those responsibilities with grace. Whether assisting with the care of those who had passed, helping with daily operations, or stepping in wherever she was needed, she approached every task with respect, curiosity, and a willingness to learn.

Daryn also brought a warm, lighthearted presence to our office. Her sense of humor and ability to brighten the room made even the busiest days a little better, and she will be greatly missed.

This fall, Daryn will be attending Cypress College and majoring in Mortuary Science as she continues pursuing a career in funeral service.

Daryn, we are incredibly proud of the young woman you have become and grateful to have been a small part of your journey. Congratulations on your graduation, and we can’t wait to see where your future takes you. ❤️

Everyone’s favorite Employee, Palmer, stopped by the office today!

Today she got some hands-on experience with the cutting-edge technology that a few of the guys around here still prefer. 😉 We’re not sure what she was working on, but she looked very busy and very important.

When was the last time you used a typewriter?

✨Your Presence is a Gift✨

Continuing our series on compassionate support during grief, today we’re reminding ourselves that your presence is often the most meaningful gift.

Words aren’t always necessary. Sometimes just sitting together, holding space, or offering a hug can speak louder than anything else. Presence shows that you care, and that the person isn’t alone in their grief.

💬 Reflection: Think about a time when someone’s simple presence mattered more than anything they could say.

What’s up with mourning jewelry?
Mourning jewelry originates from the medieval custom of distributing mourning clothes, or dooles—the idea being that every time one wore their gloves or scarf they would think of the deceased. In America, this tradition morphed from not just clothingbut to expensive luxury items like books, rings, brooches, and wine. Funeral costs got so out of controlthat many states enacted sumptuary laws banning funeral gifts though displays of mourning (in the form of jewelry) made a revival during WWI. In contemporary times mourning jewelry often takes the form of cremation jewelry.

✨Respecting Individual Grieving Styles✨

As part of our series on supporting someone through grief, today we’re exploring how everyone grieves differently.

Some people want to talk about their loss, some need quiet, some want distraction, and some want company for everyday tasks. There’s no “one way” to grieve, and your support works best when it meets them where they are.

💬 Reflection: Ask gently how someone wants support, and follow their lead. Adaptation is a form of compassion.

How did funeral flowers become a thing?
Funeral historian Bertram Puckle offers the pat explanation, “[it saves] the mental exercise of composing a suitable letter of condolence.” Puckle is only partly joking. The impulse to send flowers is one that dates back to at least35,000 years (based on archaeologist Ralph Solecki’s find in an Iraqi cave) and stems from the emotional impulse to surround the ugliness of death with beauty. Flowers also had the added benefit of masking unpleasant odors prior to the advent of embalming.
