Originally operating as Calaveras Mercantile, located across from Bret Harte High School, the business was purchased in 1955 by Hank and Matilda ("Mat") Middleton, marking the beginning of what would become a multi-generational family enterprise.
Since that time, the business has been continuously owned and operated by the Middleton family at 374 N. Main Street in Angels Camp, serving generations of local residents and visitors.
What began as a 1,500-square-foot furniture, feed, fabric, and appliance store quickly grew to meet the needs of a growing Calaveras County community.
In 1960, Hank and Mat purchased land on the edge of Altaville (now known as Angels Camp ) and developed the first shopping center in Calaveras County, anchored by Middleton's Brand Source 27,000-square-foot furniture, appliance, hardware, and gift store, along with a local bank and grocery store.
Today, Middleton’s continues as a proud third-generation family business, offering furniture, mattresses, appliances, televisions, and many from trusted brands.
As the second generation begins to ease into retirement, the third generation is stepping forward, with Nick Middleton proudly carrying the family tradition into the future."
In addition, Middleton’s operates Hallmark Gold Crown Store, featuring a wide selection of greeting cards, gifts, stationery, gift wrap, and party supplies, making it a convenient destination for special occasions, celebrations, and everyday gift-giving needs.

Middleton’s was honored as the 2010 Business of the Year by the Calaveras County Chamber of Commerce.
Middleton's has been a loyal and longstanding supporter of the Angels Camp community and the Angels Camp Business Association for many years.
Their commitment extends far beyond their business doors, helping sponsor and support numerous community events and programs that bring residents and visitors together.
