The granite in your kitchen took 300 million years to make.

Magma cooled inside the earth. Quartz crystals grew slowly, in the dark, under pressure that's hard to imagine. The stone got pushed up, weathered, exposed, quarried. Then somebody cut it into a slab and we polished one face of it and you put your coffee cup on it this morning.

People talk about natural stone like it's a finish material. It isn't. It's geological time made visible, brought into your house, and turned into the surface where your family eats breakfast.

That's worth thinking about for a second.

We've been doing this for decades and we still pause sometimes when a particularly beautiful slab comes through the shop. The earth made a thing, and now it's going into someone's kitchen.

The most common question we get: how long does this actually take?

From the day you sign off on the estimate, here's the realistic timeline.

Days 1 to 7: We schedule templating around your contractor's cabinet completion date. Templating itself takes about an hour at your house.

Days 7 to 21: Fabrication. Your stone gets cut, edged, and polished in our Ankeny shop. Most projects fall in the two-to-three week range. Complex jobs (multiple bookmatched seams, mitered waterfall edges, integrated drainboards) run longer.

Day 22ish: Installation. Six to eight hours at your house. Sealed and cleaned up before we leave.

Total: typically three to four weeks from estimate signoff to finished countertops.

If a contractor or fabricator quotes you significantly faster, ask what they're skipping. If a project quotes you significantly slower, ask why.

Stone comes in two thicknesses. The decision affects more than you'd think.Most countertops are fabricated from slabs about an inch and a quarter thick. They're the residential standard for a reason. They self-support across cabinet spans, they take an edge profile cleanly, they read as substantial.

The thinner option runs about three-quarters of an inch. These slabs are often used for vertical applications like backsplashes, shower walls, and fireplace surrounds. On counters, they require either a laminated front edge to look as substantial or a plywood substrate underneath for support.

The cost difference is real. The visual difference is real. The structural difference is real.

A good fabricator will tell you when the thinner slab is the right call and when the standard thickness is worth the price. We will too.
