How did you end up in your profession? For me, it was always meant to be.
I stayed overnight at my mom's recently, and we were going through boxes of mementos that she’s been storing for my future Presidential Library since I was a 3-year-old. Aside from the obvious genius for macaroni art that I possessed, what caught my attention was a flyer I made for a garage sale at age eight.
It read:
Come One, Come All
to the
Best Garage Sale
Of Your Entire Life!!!
Find treasures!
Save money!
Make friends!
My mom and I laughed hard. “I guess you’ve always been a copywriter,” she said, trying to catch her breath. Then we started laughing because I never got over my liberal use of the mighty exclamation point(!).
Later though, when I thought about that little girl who wrote her first piece of advertising way back then, I was and remain impressed. It became clear to me that I was born to write advertising.
Instinctively, I understood how to grab attention and that people make decisions based on underlying needs. Nobody needed my junk. But finding treasures, saving money, AND making friends? Now that I could sell.
In that moment of understanding, I had the spiritual experience of looking back and claiming my treasure, which is my talent for writing Words That Sell. Since that moment of realization, it’s all made sense.
I mean, I was a huge word nerd as a child. All of the obsessive dictionary reading, the millions of words I’ve read, and even writing limericks inspired by Shel Silverstein have guided me toward my treasure.
My treasure? Helping other people who believe in their business and want to see how far they can succeed by writing them top-notch sales copy that converts. Other people’s success makes me fulfilled.
Nowadays, I write website copy, landing pages, email sequences, blogs, etc.
But inside my heart, they’re all kicka$$ garage sale flyers.
