Shaily Fozdar is a Junior BBA and BSE in computer science. We talked to her about her experience in Nexecon and in Product Management at Microsoft (Full Transcript Attached).

Q: How has Nexecon helped you with securing and performing in internships?

A: The past two summers, I’ve interned at Microsoft, first as an Explore Intern and later as a Product Management Intern. From the start, Nexecon upperclassmen helped me figure out what careers I was interested in, introduced me to opportunities, and even edited my resume and helped me prep for interviews. Simultaneously, the projects and leadership experiences I had through Nexecon not only taught me critical thinking and presentation skills that I was able to use in my job but also gave me the confidence to excel during my summer internships. Nexecon has really taught me how to analyze larger problems and develop concrete solutions that are valuable to stakeholders, which is a critical component of Product Management.

Q: What’s been your favorite Nexecon experience and why?

A: Case competitions - while we don’t always end up winning, the late nights filled with working on interesting business problems, belting ‘Electric Love’, and dancing to ‘Baby Shark’ have been surprisingly fun!

Neena Baliga is a Junior Nexecon Member pursuing a degree in computer science and a minor in business. We talked to her about her experience in Nexecon as well as her time as an intern for Microsoft this Summer (Full Transcript Attatched).

Q: Do you feel like your Nexecon experience helped prepare you for your internship this summer?
A: Nexecon has heavily influenced my career path on my way to becoming a software development intern at Microsoft this summer. It was a really interesting internship because I did 4 weeks of project management (PM) and then worked in software development. Nexecon prepared me well for being a PM at Microsoft. At Microsoft, I did a lot of industry research and competitor analysis — internal consulting type-work that I have done with Nexecon before. This previous Nexecon experience prepared me to do a great job this summer.

Q: What has been your favorite experience with a client so far?
A: On my first ever project for a nonprofit focused on hiring individuals with disabilities, I had the opportunity to go out to their location with my Nexecon team. The client was very kind and grateful, and gave us the chance to work alongside their employees and help make products!

We hope everyone’s had an amazing summer and is getting ready to start classes next week! We can’t wait to meet you all at Festifall, BBA Meet the Clubs, and our info sessions, but until then we’ll share what some of our members did this summer.

“During my internship this summer, I worked on a public health case where I got to learn so much about the field as well as meet so many incredible people. The professional skills I’ve learned from Nexecon project work were invaluable and helped me throughout the summer!” - Sneha

“I was really excited to start my first corporate internship this summer, unfortunately, it was canceled due to the pandemic. Nevertheless, I spent my summer as a Nexecon Project Manager and had time to do the things I’ve never really had time for. I did everything from learning how to play tennis to crossing off books from my “To Read” list to creating life-long bonds with some magnificent horses. I’m excited to get back to the academic grind and I’m even more thankful that I had the time to do what I otherwise wouldn’t have been able to.” - Adam

Today, we interviewed Connor Flanigan, a Junior in The College of Engineering, about how Nexecon has influenced him in starting his own company: Staple Clothing. (Full Transcript Attached).

Q: Would you say your Nexecon experience has helped prepare you to found a company?
A: Definitely! Nexecon has been the single largest thing that prepared me to launch and now be fortunate to run a successful business. I believe Nexecon is a critical thinking club that helps its members to understand the business landscape. My experience has helped me to better understand the consumer and how businesses operate. Through my many projects, I have learned how to create value for people, and that is something that is really complex to get right, so I’m thankful to Nexecon for helping me understand this early on.

Q: Do you think Nexecon has helped support your company after its launch?
A: Absolutely - Nexecon serves as a giant board of advisors for me. I have been able to reach out to many in the club and get honest feedback. They are a support system for sure - Nexecon members were my first customers. But, also, I have received some great constructive criticism that has helped me to improve my business operations.

Virtual Summer Projects have been an integral part of the club's work, and this year there have been two projects going on this summer. Although they have been virtual, they've been going smoothly, with final deliverables coming up before the school year begins.

One of our teams has been working with a Fortune 500 client in the Transportation Industry to help identify new opportunity areas for the client's business. The team is wrapping up their final work after a summer of hard work and insightful deliverables. Although it has been a strange summer, seeing everyone's faces on Google Meet at our weekly meetings gave back a sense of much-needed normalcy. With our weekly brainstorming sessions and frequent check-ups on each other, professional and personal, this project has brought a lot of positive influences into the members' lives.

Nexecon looks forward to bringing many more such virtual projects for the fall!

Today, we have the pleasure of featuring Katie Xu, a Ross Senior BBA with a dual degree in the School of Information. Katie has been a Nexecon member since her freshman year. Today, we asked Katie to talk about her current career role and her path to get there:

Katie: I am currently an Associate Consultant Intern at Bain & Company, and ended up here mainly through my learnings and experiences in Nexecon. I remember first getting introduced to consulting during my freshman year at our annual Chicago trip, where we visit the Big 3 consulting offices. During that trip, I knew there was something about Bain that stood out to me. In the following years, I would continue being actively involved in Nexecon -- from MUCC to being Project Manager -- where I would be able to improve my problem-solving skills and create relationships with people that have ended up being mentors and friends during the recruiting process.

Over the course of the summer, I had a great experience at the firm working on a healthcare case. Going from someone who wasn’t exactly sure how her own health insurance worked to becoming an expert on reimbursement rates and hospital-specific initiatives has been incredibly rewarding.

While we look ahead at the challenges and opportunities presented by a virtual semester with Nexecon, we also look back at the Michigan Undergraduate Consulting Conference (MUCC) hosted by Nexecon that took place in February 2020. It makes us miss the world as we knew it before the pandemic! It was an incredible experience that allowed students from UMich to learn from and network with representatives from the top firms in consulting.
Nexecon is tackling the challenges of a virtual semester for the club, but our spirit shines as bright as our smiles from MUCC 2020!

A great benefit of being a University of Michigan student is the opportunity to collaborate with fellow students who are driven to make a difference. At Nexecon Consulting Group, we operate as a student-run organization that works with clients to develop solutions for their challenging, real-life issues.

Nexecon gives our members the chance to advise various clients, including local organizations such as Sava’s Cafe and No Thai as well as Fortune 500 corporations like Verizon and Delta. For these clients, we have executed scopes ranging from forecasting product demand to developing go-to-market strategies. Due to the high quality of work our consultants provide, we maintain consistent relationships with multiple clients and have had the pleasure of hearing when our recommendations are implemented.

Throughout the years, Nexecon has helped our members to develop a diverse skill set and successfully pursue careers in consulting, finance, tech, and more. We are proud to maintain an active dialogue with our alumni at companies including McKinsey, Boston Consulting Group, Bain & Co, Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, Evercore, Facebook, Google, Bain Capital, and many more.

While Nexecon has a profound impact on the professional development of its members, it's also a place where members meet their best friends. From weekend trips to Canada to bonding sessions at Ann Arbor's restaurants, the social aspect of life at Nexecon is incredible!

In future posts, we are excited to share industry insights, member testimonials, various project stories, and fun times we've had!
