The hacker didn't break in. An employee let them in, and it all started with a Microsoft Teams message.

Cybercriminals are posing as IT support employees, contacting businesses through Microsoft Teams with what looks like a routine technical issue. They might say your account needs verification, your security settings need updating, or there's a problem that requires immediate attention.

Then comes the real trap.

They ask you to share your screen or grant remote access so they can "fix" the issue. Except they're not fixing anything.

Microsoft recently exposed an attack campaign where criminals used this exact approach to gain control of employee computers, install malicious software, and move deeper into company networks.

Here's what every business needs to know:

• Your IT department should never be verified by a Teams display name alone.
• Never approve an unexpected remote-access request.
• Verify suspicious support messages using a trusted phone number or internal channel.
• Train employees to recognize scams happening inside collaboration platforms, not just email.

The scary part? The attacker doesn't necessarily need to steal your password first. They just need someone to trust them long enough to click "Allow."
