Jennifer Murphy, of CitiArts, Inc., the executive art director for this program at Denver International Airport, selected Luis Jimenez to create the stallion as well as 38 other artists that also did amazing integrated artworks for the Denver Airport. In the mid-2000's, I partnered with Jennifer Murphy and Eileen Cave as we wrote the Arts and Archives Master Plan for Dulles and Reagan National Airports, both managed by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority. This article truly explains the challenges of selecting art for airports and the many roadblocks that can appear.

The Denver airport is a magnet for conspiracy theories — and a case study in the line between mass delusion and fun.

We are fascinated by the architectural history of Washington Dulles International Airport, a stunning design by famed Finnish architect Eero Saarinen. We understand that the Airport is honoring the heritage of the Airport's design by displaying copies of some of Saarinen's blueprints. Looking forward to seeing these blueprints and other airport historical documents when next we travel through IAD.

City of Houston commissions 12 artworks for the new International Terminal at Bush Airport:

The Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs (MOCA) is pleased to announce an investment of more than $4 million in the selection of 12 new site-specific art commissions for the new Mickey Leland International Terminal (MLIT) and the new International Central Processer (ICP) at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). The commissioned works are sponsored by Houston Airports (HAS) on behalf of the City of Houston through MOCA’s Civic Art Program.

The commissioned artworks will be new additions to the City of Houston’s Civic Art Collection and are expected to be installed and on view by spring of 2024. In line with the equity guidelines and ethos of the City’s Civic Art Program and considering the goals of the HAS, this effort sought concepts for art meant to enhance the passenger experiences by highlighting ideas that are reflective of the international character of Houston.

“The magnitude of commission efforts at IAH leads in the pace and funding for increased activity in Civic Art across the City and we’re very proud of the artworks residents and visitors to Houston will soon encounter,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner. “How fitting that artworks from Houston's own artists will welcome every single international passenger landing at IAH.”

For each of the six gates for MLIT, the City requested the submission of proposals from Houston-based artists to design, fabricate and install a three-part installation addressing the upper and lower landings of the six new international gates. For all commissions, preference was given to artists not currently represented in the City of Houston Civic Art Collection.

“This significant investment will provide a unique opportunity for our airport guests to experience art,” said Mario Diaz, Director of Aviation for the City of Houston. “The modern, functional and intuitive design of the new international terminal at IAH will be accentuated by these diverse works of art.”

“We are proud of our strong collaboration with the Houston Airport System,” said MOCA Director, Necole S. Irvin. “Together, we are creating a presence at the airport through art that strongly conveys the character of our city, known to be a gateway to Latin America and our warm welcome to visitors to our city.”

All of the artworks selected reflect the welcoming nature of Houston as a city with a distinct culture; celebrating and evoking the rich and diverse local fabric that makes Houston inspiring for residents and visitors alike.

The artists developing commissions for MLIT and ICP at IAH include Reginald Adams, Miguel Arzabe, Carolina Caycedo, Marta Chilindron, Emilie Duval, Leslie Gaworecki, Marlo Saucedo and Houston Poet Laureate Emanuelee “Outspoken” Bean, Graciela Hasper, Lovie Olivia, Gerardo Rosales, Regina Silveira, Nick Vaughn & Jake Margolin and Rafael Vargas-Suarez of Vargas-Suarez Universal.

"San Francisco Ballet at 90"

A stunning new exhibit at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) celebrates San Francisco Ballet’s 90th season showing the breadth of repertoire and design created in San Francisco over the past four decades—from futuristic costumes designed by Marco Morante for Arthur Pita’s Björk Ballet (2018) to dark and edgy costumes designed by Christine Darch for Dwight Rhoden’s The Promised Land (2022).

"San Francisco Ballet at 90" is located pre-security in the International Terminal of the San Francisco International Airport. This exhibition is accessible to ticketed passengers and the general public from February 25, 2023–January 7, 2024. WHEN GRAPHIC DESIGN MATTERS:

Located on the former site of Clark Air Force Base, and nestled in the Northern Philippines, is Clark International Airport’s (CRK) brand-new passenger terminal, set to be a premier gateway connecting the Philippines to the world. When open, the refreshed CRK will accelerate business growth and promote tourism activities in Central and Northern Luzon, an important economic region in the Philippines.

Changi Airports International (CAI) and its partners have been developing CRK through its operating company, Luzon International Premier Airport Development (LIPAD) Corporation. In December 2018, the consortium won a 25-year concession to operate CRK. The goal is clear: to elevate CRK to world-class standards so that it will be an airport to make all Filipinos proud.

As an artist, I really admire the design of the three letter airport identifier and know it can be used in many facets of the terminal. We look forward to CRK being a showcase for the country's artists and artisans.

We are always fascinated when a legacy airport, when building new or expanded facilities, turns to public art to make the statement that they care about the passengers. The new Terminal A, at Newark Liberty International Airport - EWR, showcases the work of 29 local artists with unique art installations that offer a distinctive New Jersey "sense of place" as passengers are welcomed to one of the three New York-area international airports. Complementing the comprehensive public art program is an immersive digital journey created by multimedia studio Moment Factory, which showcases the Garden State’s renowned landmarks, art and innovations through a series of permanent large-scale multimedia installations.

Interestingly, this stunning new facility is being operated by Munich Airport International (MAI) subsidiary Munich Airport NJ.
