A decade ago on Valentine's Day, we launched Horos, an open-source medical image viewer, with a simple mission: to make medical imaging accessible to all. Today, we’re proud to say that Horos has been downloaded over 1 million times in 170+ countries, empowering doctors, students, and patients worldwide.

🏥 Doctors in developing regions have used Horos to provide care where resources are scarce.

📚 Students—from medical and veterinary to legal—have learned and trained with a free, high-quality viewer.

💡 Patients have taken control of their health by easily accessing and understanding their own medical images.

Today is . Most of the cases we see come through our system here at Purview are second opinions for rare or complex diseases. We often hear from patients and their families that they have already spent an enormous amount of time and money searching for a diagnosis or treatment long before they arrive at our virtual front door. That is why we are passionate about supporting second opinions. Going directly to the expert, or multiple experts very often provides clarity, more information, more options, more guidance, and peace of mind with a path forward. Doing this virtually protects the patient's health and safety and is often faster than waiting for an in-person appointment.

Our sister foundation, the Mike Shane Memorial Fund, was founded in honor and memory of one of Purview's original investors, Mike Shane, who believed in our cause. In 2018, he was diagnosed with the rare and aggressive cancer, cholangiocarcinoma. We learned that getting second and third opinions were an important part in learning about his disease.

We lost Mike a little more than a year after his diagnosis, in 2019.
He was a deeply devoted husband, father of three, and grandfather; a hard-working entrepreneur; and a generous philanthropist involved in his community. Today, in honor of his legacy, the Mike Shane Memorial Fund pays for second opinions for anyone diagnosed with the same rare cancer. Having access to CHOP's globally recognized expertise and research is especially important for children struggling with rare and complex conditions that may not have access to the same level of expertise locally.
