• The fire environment will degrade through the weekend across the state and support moderate potential for initial attack wildfire activity nearly statewide as the many regions of the state, including Central Texas and the Western/Eastern Hill County will exceed 30-days since the last wetting rain. There will be low to moderate risk for large fires with high resistance to control in the Rolling Plains and Cross Timbers in critically dry, high-risk grass/juniper and grass/oak fuel types with afternoon winds near 15 mph accompanied by temperatures near 100˚F. Pine timber for the northern half of East Texas will likely begin to exhibit increased resistance to control, including group torching.
• Thursday’s fire environment may support moderate potential for large wildfires with high resistance to control in dry to critically dry high-risk fuel, grass/juniper/oak fuel when exposed to elevated fire weather. A large fire will be possible in pine timber for the northern half of East Texas with increased winds speeds. Onshore winds of 20 mph could support a fire with increased resistance to control in the Lower Gulf Coast where rainfall deficits are observed.
• Moderate to high rates of drying in surface fuel are anticipated into the weekend, increasing the availability of surface fuel to support fire activity. The footprint of dry to critically dry surface fuel will continue to broaden for the northern half of the state where rainfall deficits are greatest.
• Hot and mostly dry conditions are expected through the weekend and into the middle of next week, likely increasing the rate of wildfire activity through the middle of August. As drought continues to build, more time, effort, and resource commitment will be required during the mop up phase of fire suppression.
