Plant Allies in the Dreamtime

Dreams are known to carry vital messages from our unconscious selves that contain hidden meaning. They carry the potential to help us heal our wounded psyches and offer us their deep wisdom that, when applied to our daily lives, can have a profound effect on our personal evolution. If we develop the awareness to listen with an open mind and an open heart to their messages and embrace the path of dreamwork, we can more easily attain self realization, personal growth, and healing of our emotional wounds and imbalances.

Many plants, herbs, and crystals have been utilized for thousands of years to enhance the experiences and deepen the potency of dreams. These natural allies have within them spiritual, physical, and emotional healing potential, helping us to open new doorways and find higher understanding and meaning in our lives through omens, symbols, synchronicities, and refined clarity in our dreams. Many of these herbs also help to create the ideal physiological conditions for these spiritual and emotional benefits to work through.

For example, the ancient use of Sandalwood, which is still common among many healers and herbalists today, has been known to ward off nightmares, induce deeper sleep, and promote lucidity in dreams. It creates a deep relaxation of the nervous system and has been used for centuries to enhance meditation as well as for calming the mind. Sandalwood's effect on our sleep is partially due to its stimulating of the pineal gland in the brain which causes a stronger than normal release of melatonin, a hormone known to increase REM sleep time and dream activity. Although its benefits are many, some would agree that often the sweet intoxicating aroma of Sandalwood alone can be enough to relax and guide us into dreamland.

Another potent medicine, Rose, one of the oldest known dream allies in the plant kingdom, has been used for thousands of years in countless cultures for many purposes. It has been used to heal the heart on physical, emotional, and spiritual levels, to nurture the soul and heal hardships and sorrows, and as a worldwide symbol for love and affection, among many other benefits. As far as its place in our dreams it has long been recognized as a profound teacher in the realms of lucid dreaming and is ideal for promoting deeper sleep, longer REM cycles, and stronger dream recall. Rose has been found to have the highest vibration of all essential oils and has one of the lowest ratios of plant matter to essential oil, sometimes taking up to 60,000 roses to produce just 1oz. of its precious oil.

Working with our dreams is a highly beneficial but sometimes difficult path where meanings and understanding can often be hard to grasp. But if we act on our desire to progress in this aspect of our lives and initiate our dedication and the movement in the direction toward understanding this language of spirit, we will most definitely experience its benefits on many levels.

Alchemical Aromatics

The soul of a plant is housed in its oils which saturate its physical parts; leaf, resin, bark, seed, flower, and root. In the esoteric tradition of Western Alchemy, these volatile oils, or "sulfur", are considered the soul or the unique consciousness of a plant or mineral.

If we take this thought into nature, we find that the unique soul of a plant often travels on the breeze in the form of vaporous oils, reaching out to passersby. These magical oils also carry with them their their own aromatic signature in hopes of gaining our attention.

When we breathe in a plants fragrance in nature, we are also breathing in its soul. This process effects us on very subtle and energetic levels. The plant, its medicine, and its soul are taken into the lungs, travel throughout the blood stream, and end up in the brain, positively effecting mind, mood, and emotions. In addition to this, many ancient cultures believe aromatic plants and incense to work on the soul level, healing our imbalances and aiding us in our spiritual evolution.

Something to think about next time you walk past a flowering plant out in nature ;)
