Coffee, connections and celebrating women entrepreneurs! ☕💜

Compass Communications is thrilled to be one of 15 women-owned businesses featured at the Heart of the Valley Chamber of Commerce's Women You Should Know event!

The event celebrates women entrepreneurs in our community, including the stories behind their businesses. What an honor to be included among such an inspiring group of women!

Our raffle basket is filled with coffee-themed goodies (naturally!). After all, great conversations often start over a cup of coffee!

“It’s like the English language took color.”

What a beautiful way for a young student to describe learning to read with dyslexia. I attended the Dyslexia Reading Connection, Inc.'s 20 Years of Impact Gala for the first time, thanks to Kim, who purchased a table and then couldn't attend herself! 😂

I joined Heather and met several others at our table (Emily, Maren, Holly and Chad) for an evening that was both fun and educational. One message from the organization's leadership: students may start out behind, but they graduate ahead. Another message: Dyslexia affects more than reading; learning to play music is also challenging. Hearing directly from students and their tutors, and even a mother, about their experiences and the difference this organization has made gave me a greater appreciation for its work.

Congratulations to Dyslexia Reading Connection on 20 years of helping students learn, grow and succeed!

Coffee with a fellow Minnesota Vikings fan! 💜💛 SKOL!

I recently met up with Conor Jones, who reached out to me after I shared a difficult experience here on LinkedIn. His message was thoughtful and compassionate, and I especially appreciated his perspective on the importance of men speaking up when women experience inappropriate behavior.

Of course, we also bonded over our shared love of the Vikings! 😂Conor suggested we grab coffee sometime, and we finally made it happen. I enjoyed learning more about him and continuing a conversation that started with a simple, kind message. And now I have another person to celebrate Vikings wins with! 💜💛

I grabbed Maria Guzman's business card at a Heart of the Valley Chamber of Commerce event, and I reached out to officially meet over coffee.

Turns out, we have a lot in common. Tattoos. A similar sense of humor. Strong opinions. And, more seriously, a shared passion for advocating for women and children.

Maria grew up here, left Wisconsin and spent years working in domestic violence advocacy before coming home to lead CASA of the Fox Cities. She’s a self-described scholarship farm kid and Xavier High School grad who returned in part to be closer to family.

We talked about her path back to the Fox Valley, the work CASA is doing for children who need someone firmly in their corner, and how we can help more people understand that work.

And we laughed. A lot. Very glad that business card made its way into my hand.

Happy Boss’s Day to me! 😂

Being my own boss has been one of the most rewarding, challenging, and occasionally ridiculous adventures of my career.

I’m proud of the business I’ve built, the clients who trust me, the relationships I’ve developed, the amount of coffee I have consumed, and the opportunity to do meaningful work on my own terms.

Of course, my boss can be a little demanding. She expects a lot, has trouble saying no, works some questionable hours, and occasionally schedules meetings over lunch.

On the bright side, she lets me wear jeans, encourages coffee meetings, and approves all my vacation requests. (Getting her to actually take the vacation is another story.)

Happy Boss’s Day to all my fellow business owners. Give yourselves a little credit today. We’ve earned it! 💜

I’ve known Jenni for years through my nonprofit work. Yet I realized there was a whole lot I didn’t know about her.

So lunch with Jenni wasn’t about Thrivent or work. I wanted the backstory.

Where did she grow up? How did she land in Appleton? When did her famous love of color and pizzazz begin? And we discussed her food blog.

Jenni has spent 25 years at Thrivent and today serves as Corporate Responsibility Manager for the Fox Cities. She has also spent years volunteering and serving nonprofits throughout our community.

I already knew that Jenni. I loved getting to know more of the woman behind the fabulous clothes and big personality.

How did I miss posting a coffee photo? ☕ That seems very unlike me. 😂

This one is with Chris of Entrusted Technology Solutions, my MSP and the guy I trust to keep the technology side of Compass Communications LLC running smoothly.

I didn’t forget Chris, though. I’m still working with him and his team and randomly running into him at coffee places like Copper Rock.

Good people. Good partners. And, clearly, one overdue coffee photo to post.

Andee Vosters recently launched her own company (for a second time!) with a passion for coaching and supporting founders.

Before our latest EQ Circle with Carrie, we had a chance to talk about what she wants that work to look like including what belongs in the business and what doesn’t.

I appreciated how thoughtful and deliberate Andee has been about building something around the work she genuinely wants to do, while leaving room for it to evolve.

We also talked about Working Genius, why she finds it so useful, and why she encourages her clients to take it. I need to take it myself.

Congratulations, Andee! I’m excited to see where you take this and look forward to more touch bases over coffee!

I think most of my connections here know one of my favorite perks of owning Compass Communications is the ability to work from just about anywhere.

Last week, I traveled to Pennsylvania for work with my client Value Capture. My grade school friend Deb me up afterward, and we spent a wonderful long weekend together in New Jersey. Today and tomorrow, were trading our weekend adventures for laptops and working side by side before I fly home.

I love the flexibility that comes with owning my own business, especially when it allows me to combine meaningful work, travel and time with people I love.

Thirteen years of knowing Angela and apparently now we have to take screenshots instead of meeting for coffee.

Over the years, we met regularly, talked communications and careers, and I had the privilege of mentoring her as she worked toward her Accreditation in Public Relations (APR).

Then she moved to Madison. Rude. 😂

I miss having her nearby, and I’m so dang proud of what she’s done, especially the internal communications work she has built her career around and the leadership in PRSA Madison.

Angela is looking for her next opportunity, which gave us plenty to talk about during our virtual catch-up. Selfishly, I’d love for that next role to bring her back this way. If you’re looking for a smart, experienced internal communications professional — or know someone who is — take a look at Angela. And if the job happens to be in Northeast Wisconsin, I’ll owe you a coffee. ☕️
