Our pilots use infrared imaging and heads up displays to safely navigate thick smoke. But that smoke doesn’t sit in one place. It can travel thousands of miles away and impact communities nowhere near the fire’s path.

Regardless of where you are, help protect your health this by keeping tabs on air quality in your community. You can do this by using the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Fire and Smoke Map: https://fire.airnow.gov. Just enter your zip code and get access to all the EPA’s air quality monitors in that area.

Whether you’re working a wildfire, living in its path or seeing it on the news thousands of miles away, we all have to take steps to keep ourselves and our families safe from wildfire threats.

We protect every piece of land we’re contracted to serve as if it’s our own hometown. So you can imagine what it feels like when one of our pilots or SSVOs is operating from a place they really do call “home.”

This happened recently for one of our pilots while he was scooping from the Rainy River in Minnesota. He grew up fishing, snowmobiling, tubing, and boating those waters. So it was a full-circle moment for him to be back at that same river last month, this time in a , helping to protect a place that means so much to him and countless others.

Moments like this really drive home why we do what we do: Because every place is home to someone and is worth protecting.

Like for our pilot, Minnesota is home to Dauntless Air. And while it may still feel a bit cold and icy at times in the state, that doesn’t mean the threat of isn’t already here. Spring brings rapidly changing conditions, and before the landscape fully “greens up,” what lies beneath the melting snow is often dry, dead fuel for . It’s a high-risk period across the state. That’s why our contract with the Bureau of Indian Affairs begins in April – right as conditions start to shift. Since then, we’ve deployed to our first fires in the state and continue to be ready to protect any hometown, here and beyond, as other fires ignite.

This year in South Carolina we’re building on a productive 2025 season that saw Dauntless Fire Bosses drop more than 315,000 gallons of water over 17 wildfires in the state. We’re proud of the impact we can make as an integrated part of the state’s broader wildfire response system, led by The South Carolina Forestry Commission.

To keep residents safe, SCFC coordinates more than 150 resources, including dozers, helicopters, recon planes, and Fire Bosses. Last month, SCFC invited community leaders and the public to Owens Field Airport to see some of these assets up close. We had the chance to show folks the Fire Boss and discuss the role and impact that our amphibious planes can have in containing fires fast.

Bottomline: Success in our line of work is ALWAYS a team effort, and we’re honored to be part of a team that’s making a big difference for people in the Palmetto State.

The strength of our industry isn’t just in the aircraft we fly; it’s in the people and aviators who dedicate themselves to our mission. We were reminded of that time and again at last month’s Women in Aviation International conference in Grapevine, Texas. We were there to celebrate women aviators past and present, including two recipients of the inaugural Juliana Turchetti Memorial Scholarship, Kat Sullivan and Isa Mirela.

Kat and scholarship coordinator Travasha Runyon joined us at and toured our maintenance facility in Cleburne, TX. They spent time in a Fire Boss cockpit and had a video call with Juliana’s family and Isa.

It was an inspiring few days seeing the drive and talent of up-and-coming pilots like Kat and Isa and so many others who are walking a path that Juliana helped to blaze. We’re honored to be a small part of their journey, and proud to help the next generation of women pilots thrive in Juliana’s footsteps.

“Mission ready on day 1.” That’s part of why our annual training in Texas always goes above and beyond the industry standard. This year was no different –

➡️ 140+ hours of flight training logged, including time in our two-seater – so all pilots from our newest to our most experienced trained with our Instructor Pilots to ensure safe and effective flying from everyone

➡️ 700+ training scoops completed

➡️ 500,000+ gallons of water dropped

➡️ 8 Dauntless Fire Bosses used

➡️ Air attacks flew above our target area, working with our pilots on FTA communication skills, target identification and safe and accurate drops

➡️ The Texas A&M Forest Service (TFS) joined us for simulated mission training to call in Fire Bosses from the ground

➡️ 2 smokejumpers from Alaska helped with classroom sessions and our training with TFS incident managers on working with Fire Bosses from the ground

➡️ Extra courses and real-world training scenarios were added on top of required recurrent training

➡️ Every operation was a coordinated effort between our pilots, mechanics and SSVOs – both new and returning

Going above and beyond in these ways is part of what makes us Dauntless. And our partners know it’s core to how we arrive day-1 as a reliable, effective and precise part of our joint mission. See you out there 💪

Are you a seasoned aviation professional who’s ready to lead the safety program for North America’s largest and most advanced Fire Boss fleet? Let’s talk.

We’re seeking a Director of Safety (DOS) to oversee the evolution, implementation and continuous improvement of our Safety Management System (SMS), regulatory compliance and operational risk management across all flight, maintenance and ground operations.

Reporting directly to the CEO, the DOS is as a key member of our senior leadership team, ensuring our safety protocols remain best-in-class, field-relevant, and effective as we fly to protect people, land and property from the devastation of wildfires.

Fighting wildfires takes national coordinated effort, and that fact has been on full display in Oklahoma this month.

Starting March 1, Washington state loaned two of our Fire Bosses to Oklahoma. The timing has been crucial – 99% of the Sooner State is currently experiencing some form of drought, and above-average wildland fire potential persists for central and western parts of the state.

Thanks to this resource sharing agreement, we’ve been on hand to help Oklahoma Forestry Services contain wildfires in the region, including a blaze in Woodward County. These photos were taken on Sunday near Quinlan by a community member in the area (thank you, Travis!).

Resource sharing is just one example of the multi-agency collaboration that’s required to keep people across the country safe from wildfire threats. We’re proud to be part of the mission—wherever it takes us.

Training season is in full swing! Earlier this month, our senior Seat Support Vehicle Operators (SSVOs – formerly called Crew Chiefs) gathered in Idaho for recurrent annual training. But this year looked a little different: We introduced a new internal carding system specifically for them.

As most of you know, federal contract carding systems are a mandate for pilots and mechanics. They exist to verify that specific safety, equipment and training standards are met.

We believe SSVOs deserve to be trained and evaluated with that same type of rigor. Why? Because they’re essential personnel who transport our trucks and trailers thousands of miles across the country every season. They’re responsible for each aircraft’s fueling and decontamination system, and they manage the trailers that carry fuel, gel suppressants and critical parts and tools.

Bottomline: SSVOs are a vital part of our aerial firefighting operations, and this new carding system and our recurrent training helps us ensure that each one of them is ready for any situation, base or contract that comes their way. đź’Ş

Based in Idaho, Texas, and Minnesota, these highly skilled teams are the backbone of our operation. Their dedication, precision, and attention to detail ensure our pilots can launch with confidence and our aircraft can perform when it matters most. Behind every successful mission is a maintenance crew committed to safety, readiness, and excellence – season after season.
