TGAEC hires Hydrologist Julia Petreshen!
Julia is taking Edward's position (Edward is off to Wyoming to start his PhD program). She earned her Master's degree from University of Minnesota-Duluth, is an expert in fog-precipitation (perfect for Arcata), and is a technical tree climber. Turbidity, water quality, and streamflow measurement are some of the skills she brings to TGAEC. Welcome, Julia!

Q! Now that I have your attention, I am referring to discharge. That's the letter hydrologists use to designate discharge in formulas and sometimes refer to discharge simply as "Q". It can be hard to measure accurately in small streams and ditches. The Parshall Flume works great for this. We are testing the 6" Parshall Flume we built. The stage is measured at one point upstream of the constriction and translates to an accurate Q. The headwalls are a recycled sign readily available at the local scrapyard. After a good rain, the Q is 0.94 cfs in this photo.

TGAEC is helping assess California statewide salmonid passage flow criteria for CDFW. We set up several transects on the SF Noyo River downstream of the CDFW fish counting weir in order to assess the flows and depths that allow for fish passage. This curious Coho swam by while Justin was conducting a flow measurement with a mini meter. Undoubtably the flashing of the rotating cups attracted its atteniton.

TGAEC is monitoring the underwater noise produced by pile driving during reconstruction of the Alameda Marina. Underwater noise produced by pile driving can be loud enough to be harmful to fish and marine mammals. TGAEC monitors the underwater noise with sensitive hydroacoustic equipment ensuring that the construction contractor does not exceed the criteria established NMFS. TGAEC is working closely with Alluvion Biological Consulting's marine mammal observers and Dutra's construction crew ensuring marine mammals do not enter the area where the underwater noise could be permanently harmful.

TGAEC surveyed the extent of eelgrass beds in the No Name Dock Subtidal Lease Site enabling the placement of aquaculture equipment in locations that won't impact that sensitive habitat. Eelgrass growth in Humboldt Bay is limited to depths less than 2 meters (referenced to a zero tide) and shallower in North Bay where the water is more turbid. Humboldt Bay has some of the best eelgrass habitat in California.

TGAEC installed a couple of V-notch weirs to measure streamflow in Martin Slough as pat of the restoration efforts at the Eureka Municipal Golf Course. V-notch weirs are a great way to measure small flows and only require knowing the elevation of the water surface relative to the bottom of the V. Edward is leveling the plate during installation prior to the water flowing through the V.

The geolibrary contains decades of oceanography research from the personal collections of Humboldt State University Professor Dr. James Avery Gast and University of Washington Professor Dr. Tommy Thompson.
