Join us on Zoom for an engaging presentation by David Zuber as he explores the early history of Orick and Stone Lagoon through the lives of four remarkable women—three of Native descent and one an immigrant from Canada. Their stories highlight the challenges and resilience of life in the region during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The presentation will conclude with the unusual tale of a circus elephant’s visit to Orick!

David Zuber, a native of Orick, holds a history degree from Cal Poly Humboldt and a master’s from the University of Birmingham, England. Before retiring, he spent many years as an educator in Del Norte County.

Don’t miss this fascinating look at Humboldt’s past!

Introducing the Autumn edition of the Humboldt Historian!

The cover art is the mural “Fowl” by Dave Young Kim, found at the alleyway of Charlie Moon Way & E St. This edition’s theme surrounds the Eureka Chinatown Project, an initiative by community members and Humboldt Asians & Pacific Islanders in Solidarity to honor the history and culture of the first Chinese people in Humboldt County. Inside you will find unique articles on a range of topics: a Hawaiian-Chinese man’s experience living in 1930s Humboldt, the power of art in addressing historical trauma, the purpose and mission of the Eureka Chinatown Project – as well as local history articles on Clam Beach, electricity, and football! And we hope to see you this Saturday at the Clarke Museum for the symposium "Chinese Labor Days: Contributions of Local ‘Chinese Pioneers’ to Nineteenth-Century Humboldt County,” featuring authors from this edition as panelists!

We are proud to honor Tony Gosselin & Sons Family Owned Tire Company as our first over-the-title sponsor!

A new exhibit curated from private collections and the Trinidad Museum, opening during September Arts Alive!

Join us for a journey into the vibrant world of Brian Duane Tripp (1945-2022), a celebrated member of the Karuk Tribe whose artistic prowess and cultural contributions have left an indelible mark on history. Including the mural on the Clarke’s building in Opera Alley, “ The Sun Set Twice On The People That Day.”

Born and raised in the heart of Klamath, CA, Brian's journey began amidst the rich tapestry of Karuk culture. From a young age, his artistic talents shone brightly, earning him accolades such as "Most Talented" during his high school years. Yet his path would soon take a profound turn when he answered the call to serve in the Vietnam War, an experience that deeply influenced his artistic vision upon his return.

At Humboldt State University (now Cal Poly Humboldt), Brian immersed himself in the study of art, eventually becoming a pioneer in Native American Art History. His creations, spanning from the 1980s to the early 2000s, are hailed as the zenith of his creativity, blending traditional Karuk themes with poignant commentary on the injustices faced by Indigenous peoples. His artworks, often using newspapers as canvas to amplify political statements, have graced prestigious institutions from the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento to the New Museum in New York City.

On September 7th, during Arts Alive at the Clarke Historical Museum, we invite you to delve into Brian Tripp's world. Explore how his art reflects not just his remarkable talent, but also his deep-rooted commitment to preserving Karuk heritage and advocating for Indigenous rights. Discover pieces that speak volumes about resilience, identity, and the enduring spirit of cultural revitalization.
