“We are, all at once, composer and composed.” —Maya Angelou
By Mary V. Gelinas
M.C. Escher’s famous drawing of hands illustrates perfectly the message in my March 31 post “What If It’s Not Either This or That?” https://www.spaceisnotempty.net/blog
Our western minds habitually think in opposites, polarities, and separation. I like this, I don’t like that. You are wrong and I am right. I am separate from you as you are separate from me.
But what if this way of thinking is an illusion?
Slowly, and I hope very soon, we are coming to the same realization as Maya Angelou. We are interconnected, part of a seamless whole, simultaneously being the composer and the composed. As Alan Briskin and I point to in 𝑆𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑒 𝐼𝑠 𝑁𝑜𝑡 𝐸𝑚𝑝𝑡𝑦, we can experience this whole and this multi-directional influencing through field awareness. Just as Escher’s hands are drawing one another, so too the fields are affecting us as we affect the fields around us.
How do you want to compose the field inside and around you as a leader, coach, consultant, organizational, community or family member?
