Biohazards!

What is considered a biohazard? Basically any organic or chemical material that is not where it is supposed to be. Safety is important when encountering biohazards so always wear a mask and gloves. Sewage leaks are a common biohazard, and can occur in the most inconvenient parts of a home. Our job is to safely remove it from your property without cross contaminating the home. It’s particularly important to have professionals come in because it is easy not to clean it thoroughly, so call us!

Remediation: to wait or not to wait?

We have had a couple of calls where clients debated whether or not to remediate water and mold damage now or wait. While you make the final decision, here are some things to consider. Mold damage becomes more expensive the longer you wait, and it spreads rapidly. Estimates are based on what detectors pick up and what is seen, but mold can fit anywhere so it the price can increase once work begins. Think about it and call us!

What is the point of a certification? Well mold is a tricky thing, and is difficult to get rid of if not handled correctly. The IIRC is the governing body for mold experts, and gives us up to date information and materials to kill mold. It also adds a layer of accountability since we know how to remediate properly, whereas someone without this qualification isn’t expected to know everything.

Mold hurts the resale value on your home! It’s tempting to let the next owner remediate the mold, but the damage- and thus the price- increases over time- so it’s better to handle it sooner if you don’t want to lose money!

Water damage and electricity!

Water damage can cause short circuits, fry entire electrical systems, and shock anyone coming in contact with the electrified water. You never know if standing water has been electrified by looking at it so be sure to cut off the electricity at the source, and call someone before risking an injury. If the electrical box itself has water on it, leave the area and call a professional immediately.
It can corrode wiring if left for more than 24 hours, which can cause a house fire. Never let water cause more damage than necessary, call us!

What to do with different categories of water contamination:

Category 1: Clear water, which comes from a burst water pipe, leaking sink, etc. This is a sanitary source, and it’s ok to come into contact with it. Be mindful of where it is and what else could get into it, like household chemicals that could make it more dangerous.

Category 2: Grey water, this usually comes from dishwashers, disposals, and washing machines. While the water isn’t dangerous to the touch, it will cause illness if ingested. Keep pets and children away from it.

Category 3: Black or brown water. This usually comes from plumbing, or a flood similar to Helene. Do not come into physical contact with it, and close off the area if possible.

All of this should be addressed immediately, as building materials hold water and cause more extensive (and expensive!) damage if left to sit. Call us and we can be out there within an hour!
