Be a Lighthouse, Not a Tugboat

Early in a session this week, a client admitted something a lot of leaders feel but rarely say out loud. They had been trying to lead by rescuing everyone.

Every time a team member struggled, they jumped in, took on the problem, and dragged the person to shore. It felt like care. It was quietly running them into the ground.

So we talked about the difference between a lighthouse and a tugboat.

A tugboat leaves its post, jumps into the water, and pulls one ship in at a time. It burns out doing it.

A lighthouse stands on a strong foundation and shines. It guides everyone toward the harbor at once, steady through any storm.

I watched something shift. The goal was never to stop caring. It was to lead from a place that does not move.

A client came to our last call scattered......

Tabs everywhere.

A dozen "perfect" businesses all calling at once. Every listing looked like the one.

Here is what I told them.

Your first business is not the dream. It is the doorway.

Treat it like a starter home. Move in for five years. Build equity. Bring fresh eyes and new energy to a tired company. Then sell, step up, and go after the one you actually wanted all along.

The trap is believing the first deal has to be the perfect deal. It doesn't. It just has to be the right numbers in a market with room to grow.

Stop chasing businesses. Start building a path.

That shift, from looking for the summit to placing the next stepping stone, is where the whole game changes.

Hard conversations are leadership in disguise.

This week, a client sat down already dreading a meeting they had been avoiding for weeks. A team member, a performance gap, the weight of an overdue conversation pressing on their shoulders.

We talked it through, and something shifted.

The conversation they were avoiding wasn't a confrontation. It was an act of care. Good leaders develop the people in front of them, even when it's uncomfortable. Especially when it's uncomfortable.

When you tell someone the truth with respect, you give them a chance to rise. You leave a positive mark, no matter what they do with it. That's not management. That's leadership.
