Tip: Pay attention to items that don't have sales ranks.

You could be seeing brands or products which aren't well represented on the platform.

Could this be a great opportunity for a new relationship with a vendor who would like to get their products into the marketplace? Offer a partnership opportunity to advance and protect their brand, authorization to sell their products, and after a few test buys, it might be time to start talking about exclusivity.

HOT tip for the best use of your Amazon Product Research!

Gather your lists which you previously searched and discarded. Find products overlooked when you found they didn't have sales rank information. Resort your lists to only include those neglected items and look up them up again. Some will have increased in rank or have one now whereas they didn't before.

After running a new search, isolate the items that still missing a rank. Search out the most profitable to look up and discover any significant quantity of product reviews. They may be selling well, yet the rank is missing because of a missing Amazon data point. Also, select the items with the least number of competing sellers. Finally, filter the top selections and source direct from the manufacturer.

data tips
Once you get your spreadsheet back appended with indbl data....you have some powerful opportunities. For starters, sort by multiple indicators. Maybe start with just sales rank and margin. Move everything that is left to a different tabbed worksheet. Go back to your main sheet. Now sort by other interesting options like number of competing offers in fba. Or, you could look at the number of days to ship.

Maybe all of your competition out of stock?

Maybe all of the other sellers for this item are in China?

Look for opportunity where you couldn't see it previously.

Make sure you check the sales rank and price history before making a final buying decision.

If the deal is too good to be true....don't get burned.

Ask....was Amazon selling this but they ran out of stock? When they are back in stock you won't be able to make any margin. You might even want to go as far as making a listing for this prospective product to make sure it isn't restricted for you. Or, if you are basing all of your profit calculations on this product being fba, make sure they didn't just restrict it to mfn only.

How we calculate Profit Percentage
This is always determined by the Net Profit divided by
the Total Cost of an item.

When you see the term "Margin," that is defined by the Net Profit
divided by the Revenue. These terms have SPECIFIC definitions that
are often used interchangeably in the common lexicon but
are NOT interchangeable and have very different meanings.
We prefer to know that you have to spend $100 to make $50
and that your Net Profit % for doing so is 50%.

Things to watch out for...
Look carefully at shipping credits amounts (for MFN) and weights for items. Both of these variables are ones we can't control but that can DRAMATICALLY skew the results you see displayed in the Net Profit calculations. If you see a "too good to be true" profit calc. %, MAKE SURE you verify that an item's weight as well as the amount allocated for shipping pass the smell test.

Watch for statistically significant differences...
When you get your list back and it shows the profits make sure you pay special attention to HUGE disparities.

For instance, if show a loss is $22 because your product purchase cost is $24 but the Buy Box price is $6.50, you know there is a great likelihood that the number of pieces that you are purchasing for $24 is NOT a single piece but probably something like a dozen of those items.

Look for those opportunities because these dramatic differences will give you the hints you need to possibly alter your price for that item to reflect a purchase cost of $2 instead of the $24 it currently shows. You will certainly be making a different buying decision and possibly capitalizing on a previously undiscovered buying opportunity.
