If you own your own business and take deductions for use of your personal vehicle, for the year 2020, that deduction is $0.575 per mile.
Ever since I have been preparing tax returns, I have found that using the mileage deduction is far better than actual expenses.
If you use actual expenses and you DO NOT have any major repairs, then the mileage deduction is far better than gas, oil and minor repairs.
Another reason to use miles. If you have a client at your church or the grocery store and you talk to them every time you are there, then you can claim that mileage as a business expense because you talked to a client. That is a lot to keep up with, but if you have a small calendar or notebook in your vehicle, you can write down the date and to whom you spoke.
Once you know the distance it is to and from these places, the total miles are easy to figure.
So, if you drive 10,000 miles for work in 2020, your business deduction would be $5,750. I could go on about the cost, but that would bore most of you.
