Imagine receiving an email late last week confirming details for the upcoming John F. Kennedy Highschool Career Day presentation you volunteered for months ago when you were feeling confident and fearless.
I admit, I had a millisecond where I thought to cancel. And then I took a moment to pause.
Career Day. High schoolers. My alma mater, Recently re-connecting with my 'Kennedy Sisters'.
I missed the presentation deadline, but knowing that I needed to make a connection and my target audience were highschoolers, I decided to put one together anyway.
I know highschoolers. Having a senior in high school and a sophomore in college myself, I understand their pressure.
My message was clear:
🔶 College isn't for everyone.
🔶 You aren't expected to know what you want to do for the rest of your life.
🔶 Don't get stuck in a career you dislike. There is always another path.
🔶 Learning is a lifelong journey.
And I introduced the "People" side of IT.
I answered questions, encouraged curiosity and planted seeds.
As I wandered the halls of my old high school, I found my 18 year old self. Although I do not regret my journey - the one that brought me to where I am today, it would have been nice to have been advised these truths when I was that scared kid.
I am truly honored to have been able to spend my day encouraging our future.
