Quick story that I think you'll recognize.

Someone on your team asks for honest feedback. You give it to them. It doesn't go well. Next time they ask, you give them the version that keeps the peace.

That's not a character flaw. That's just what happens. We all do it.

But here’s the catch: the same thing is happening to you. At some point, something taught your team that the truth isn’t worth the risk.

And so it shows up like this:

▪️The meeting ends and the real issue never got named
▪️ Someone nods along and you find out later they had serious doubts
▪️ You ask how things are going and the answer is always "good"

Your team already knows what you want to hear. The question is — what is that costing you?

It's 3 minutes. I think it'll land: https://zurl.co/9EN64

Would love to hear what stands out for you.

Most leaders believe they are good listeners.

But here's what I've seen over and over again working with leadership teams for nearly 30 years: the moment someone says something we don't agree with, we correct them. We debate. We respond.

And the second we do that, we lose the real issue entirely. Because whatever somebody first tells you is the issue... is almost never the real issue.

In a 2 minute clip, I share:

A simple question that gets people to open up
The instinct that shuts people down before they get to what's really going on
How to prove to someone that you actually get where they're coming from

Use this once. You’ll see what I mean.

Most organizational problems aren’t caused by a lack of intelligence or strategy.
They’re caused by what people don’t say.

Leaders are often the last to hear the truth. By the time issues surface, they show up as missed deadlines, disengagement, rework, or quiet resentment.

On Thursday, March 12, at 2:00 PM ET, I’m hosting a live virtual session on how executives unintentionally shut down honest communication and what to do differently.

We’ll cover how to:

• Get people to say what they’re really thinking
• Surface hidden issues early
• Reduce defensiveness and office politics
• Address breakdowns without damaging trust
• Build a culture where honesty is normal, not heroic

This is about creating the conditions where people speak up early without fear.
