Building connections at community events can create meaningful opportunities to reach military families. At a pre-deployment event for U.S. Army Reserve soldiers and their families, a Magellan Federal Personal Financial Counselor (PFC) staffed an Office of Financial Readiness resource table and connected with attendees seeking information and support.

One soldier's mother stopped to learn more about the services available and shared her appreciation for having financial support resources available to service members. She gathered materials and contact information to pass along, expressing hope that more soldiers would take advantage of these valuable resources.

Conversations like these help raise awareness of the no-cost financial guidance available to service members and their families when they need it most.

Behind every sound financial decision is the kind of guidance that reframes the question entirely. When a service member came in ready to lease a brand-new vehicle, a Magellan Federal Personal Financial Counselor (PFC) took a closer look at the full picture before any paperwork was signed.

After completing a structured spending plan review, it became clear that the proposed lease payment would consume more than 30% of the member's monthly income, and no contributions were being made toward retirement savings. The expert recommended exploring a more affordable pre-owned vehicle option instead. The member ultimately chose a used vehicle, reducing their overall transportation costs and creating additional room in their monthly budget.

Those budget improvements allowed the member to begin contributing to the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) while also building savings for future financial goals.

Supporting military-connected students, a Magellan Federal counselor facilitated a Life Skills group focused on understanding and managing guilt, shame, and negative thoughts. Through interactive activities, students explored how unhelpful thought patterns can affect their academic performance, physical readiness, and emotional wellbeing.

They anonymously shared words used to describe themselves, discussed the impact of these messages, and practiced reframing negative self-talk into more balanced perspectives. Visual projects helped students distinguish between guilt and shame, reinforcing the idea that guilt can motivate change while shame can hold someone back.
