It appears I may be ramping up Wordracer services again. The coronavirus and its far-reaching effects have caused me to reflect on long-term, viable ways to pay the bills. When I was much younger, my elders told me to find at least one skill and be good at it, something that is almost always in need. Typing or transcription has always come easy for me. I enjoy words and it is a sought after skill. Just like when I play the piano, my fingers glide across the keys. If you are in need of a highly motivated and accurate transcriptionist who pays attention to detail, practices confidentiality and truly enjoys the work, please contact me.

Transcription is a rollercoaster business - sometimes there is lots of work and other times it's like watching paint dry. Technology has advanced so much that the younger generation can do so much of the work themselves. But, I continue to be available to the public for transcription needs.

I've been busy transcribing so haven't stopped in to write on WordRacer's timeline. I'm working as an Independent Contractor d/b/a WordRacer for three different court reporting firms out of DC and Massachusetts. I'm still awaiting security clearance from the federal government to transcribe immigration hearings for the U.S. Department of Justice for a transcription company in PA. I have two other transcription companies that want me to work for them as well, but I'm not trying to take on too much and not meet client expectations. I am learning new words and phrases and increasing my experience and knowledge. It is nice to be able to work from home!

Transcription isn't just typing words. It's listening repeatedly to multiple speakers, sometimes speaking over each other, interrupting each other. There are speakers who mumble, trail off or speak too fast or too quietly. Transcription is knowing how to spell properly, to distinguish "accept" from "except" and "their" from "there." It's researching words, statutes, places - far away places. It is a constantly learning experience - learning new words, proper spelling, sentence structure. Sometimes a case will tear at your heart or make you shake your head. And, no, transcribing from home is in no way boring or lonely. It takes great patience, focus, dedication and resourcefulness.🤔

Today's word of the day: sequacious
Sequacious (which, in case you were wondering, is never used as a compliment), may be traced back to the Latin sequax (which means "inclined to follow"). The word dates to the first half of the 17th century; our earliest citation is from Edward Reynold's 1640 beach-read A Treatise of the Passions and Faculties of the Soule of Man With the Severall Dignities and Corruptions Thereunto Belonging. In addition to "intellectually servile," sequacious has a secondary meaning, which is "subservient." This sense is now considered archaic, and little used.

Transcription isn't simply typing. Legal transcription, in particular, requires transcribing everything heard, including uh, um, partial words, slang words, and interpreting what is said when there is crosstalk, a fire truck going by, and when parties trail off and are barely audible. Verbatim transcription is the art of converting spoken word into text such that a message is captured exactly the way it has been spoken. This requires a keen ear and attention to detail. Verbatim transcripts cannot be created by mindlessly listening and typing.

The word for today is agelast (pronounced 'adj-ee-last'), which means 'one who never laughs'. It is believed that the word derives from the name of the well-to-do Roman of the 2nd century BC, Crassus Agelastus, who was believed to have laughed only once in his life.
