THE TIME IS NOW — FALL FOOD PLOT SEASON IS HERE

September is knocking on the door, and for a big part of the country, we’re entering the sweet spot for planting fall food plots.

Warm soil, cooler nights, and increasing chances of moisture can create ideal conditions to get your fall plots established and producing before hunting season really gets rolling.

Whether you’re planting a brand-new plot, filling in a summer plot, or preparing that favorite kill plot, timing matters.

A few things to remember:

Watch the forecast. Whenever possible, try to get your seed in the ground ahead of a good rain.

Don’t plant too early just because you’re ready. You want your plot young, tender, and attractive when you need it most.

Pay attention to planting depth. Small seeds generally need very little soil coverage. Planting too deep can be worse than planting too shallow.

Get your soil right. The best seed in the world can’t overcome poor soil fertility or incorrect pH.

Match the seed to your goals. Are you looking for early-season attraction, late-season food, or season-long nutrition? Build your plot around when you want deer using it.

The work you put in over the next few weeks can pay off all fall and well into the winter.

MINERAL SEASON ISN’T OVER JUST BECAUSE HUNTING SEASON IS GETTING CLOSER.

It's easy to shift all our attention to stands, cameras and food plots once August arrives.

But herd management doesn't stop.

We spend a lot of time talking about summer food sources.

Then we spend a lot of time talking about fall food plots.

But there's an important question in between:

What are your deer going to eat during the transition?

As agricultural crops mature, native vegetation changes and summer forage begins losing attractiveness, deer start adjusting their feeding patterns.

At the same time, your fall plots may not yet be producing at their peak.

That's why a complete nutrition strategy is bigger than one bag of seed or one feeding location.

Look at your entire property.

Summer forage → Fall plots → Natural browse → Supplemental nutrition where appropriate → Late-season food.

The objective isn't to have one great food source.

It's to eliminate nutritional gaps.

That's the difference between planting food plots and managing a property for whitetails.
