Many leaders build their careers by being the person with all the answers.

But truly effective leadership eventually requires something different.

Matt Kucharski shares why he believes leaders need to move from the "Iron Man" mindset to building "Avengers," creating ensemble teams where everyone has the opportunity to contribute and succeed.

None of us develops our leadership style in isolation.

Matt Kucharski reflects on the mentors and business leaders who shaped his approach, from learning the art and science of communications to understanding relationships, purpose, and sound business judgment.

One of Matt's points that hits home: great leaders are lifelong students of other leaders.

What keeps someone at one organization for nearly four decades?

Matt Kucharski says every professional should regularly evaluate four things: the work, the pay, the path, and their identity.

He says few careers provide all four equally. Great leaders continually evaluate what matters most at different stages of their careers.

Who are your leadership heroes?

For David Grossman, Founder & CEO, The Grossman Group, they are everyday people who step outside their comfort zone, show vulnerability and authenticity, and help bring forward a solution.

Leadership does not always come with a title. Sometimes it's simply the choice to step forward and make a difference.

What's the best antidote to worry?

Action.

David Grossman, Founder & CEO, The Grossman Group and I talked about this during the pandemic, when leaders were facing uncertainty unlike anything they had experienced before.

That same mindset applies to the work David is doing today through The CCO Advisory: helping communications leaders move from recognizing the need for change to taking action.

When David Grossman, Founder & CEO, The Grossman Group shifted from PR and external communications to internal communications, he saw an opportunity to have more influence over outcomes.

That idea feels especially relevant today as the CCO role continues to evolve.

David recently launched The CCO Advisory to help communications leaders modernize the function and meet those expanding expectations.

One of my favorite questions on Taking the Lead is asking guests to share something we wouldn't find on their LinkedIn profile.

Carmella Glover did not disappoint. She loves learning, is an avid reader, and plays seven different instruments.

Seven.

Including the tuba, which may be a first for Taking the Lead. Watch the full conversation here: https://www.jacobscomm.com/taking-the-lead/

Carmella Glover couldn't figure out why she wasn't getting promoted.

The answer wasn't technical expertise. It was communication. After beginning her career as a chemical engineer, she realized that communication, problem-solving, and leading through change would ultimately matter more than any technical skill.

What's the difference between managing people and leading them?

According to Carmella Glover, it starts with helping others succeed. We discuss developing talent, embracing ambiguity, and creating an environment where people can thrive.

Her perspective also reminded me of a leadership lesson shared years ago by Kim Sample of The PR Council: great leaders help people achieve things they didn't know they were capable of achieving.
