With summer in full swing, you might be seeing more stinging insects around your home. While both bald-faced hornets and yellowjackets can be aggressive, understanding their differences can help you stay safe!
๐ Yellowjackets: Often mistaken for bees, these scavengers are attracted to picnics, trash, and sweet drinks. They build nests in the ground, in wall voids, or in bushes. They are fiercely protective of their nests and can sting multiple times.
โซโช Bald-Faced Hornets: Actually a type of yellowjacket, these larger, black and white insects build distinctive, papery, football-shaped nests high in trees, shrubs, or on structures. They are incredibly defensive and their stings are known to be very painful and can cause severe allergic reactions.
Why are they dangerous near your home?
Both species will sting if they feel their nest is threatened. Foot traffic, vibrations, or even just being too close can trigger an attack.
Multiple Stings: Unlike bees, hornets and yellowjackets can sting repeatedly, increasing the risk of a severe reaction.
Allergic Reactions: For individuals with allergies, a single sting can be life-threatening.
